will Chávez use the current standoff with Colombia to declare martial law?

Chavez has openly stated that he wishes to rule Venezuela for 50+ years.

He recently held a referendum to amend the constitution to get rid of term limits, but that failed.

So do you think he might use this conflict to hold onto power indefinately?

I think people got it twisted.........why would he implement martial law? It was jmaking a point to Colombia not to encroach on his territory

Chavez is in trouble with the citizens of Venezuela, they are beginning to understand he is really a dictator in sheep's clothing and will eventually take control of everything. The saber rattling he is doing reminds me of a classic "Wag the Dog" scenario, that is; he has to do something big to draw attention away from his process of claiming the country is his. Look for him to provoke Columbia, it will be the proxy war between us and Iran.....

Probably. This is just the sort of thing he's been looking for - a reason to continue his despotism.
