I would not try it! For one thing, fumes from plastics can be deadly, and you can't possibly judge how much is "safe". Perhaps no amount is safe for you to inhale. Those fumes will be in the air long after you finish your project. Also, it could damage or ruin the microwave. Remember: When preparing things in a microwave, you are warned to use microwave-safe containers.
You definitely should do some research before you attempt such a project.
Are you sure you want to destroy records that might be worth money? Unless they're badly scratched or warped, records can be more valuable than you might think. My brother-in-law is a collector, and I'm stunned by how much he pays for items.

It would probably melt the records rather than soften them. A few seconds in a microwave can be the difference between sucess and disaster.

You can melt the plastic or very old wax ones.
Do be eyeballing the process the whole time.
There is fire danger if you overheat them.
Vinyl Chloride (a possible vapor product),
is not recommended breathing material.
If you try it at all do so outdoors and up wind.

They get soft, then melt after that the microwave is pretty much done, stinks and has melted vinyl in it....
But you can pull em out soft and bend them make things with them...
