annual: n. A plant which you buy at a nursery in the spring and it dies before blooming.
perennial: n. A plant which, if it had lived, would have bloomed from year to year.
Sorry, couldn't resist.
An annual blooms all summer long, then sets seeds and dies Examples: Marigolds, zinnias, cosmos, petunias, salvia, periwinkle.
A perennial is a plant that lives to survive the winter and comes back every year. Examples: Iris, daylilies, phlox, peonies, sedum.

A Perennial comes back up year after year, and an annual lives for just one season. Annuals are usually more colorful than perennials ...therefor they are regularly used in hanging baskets and container plantings. Perennials are most commonly planted right in the landscape/

Hello,
An annual last only one season, for example spring, summer or fall.
A perennial will come back year after year, if you divide them about every for years early in spring or late fall, depending on the perennial plant.
Perennial plants are considered to be, along with trees and shrubs, the back bone of a garden.
I hope I answered your question.
Happy gardening,
