Okay, I went for all twelve titles. Here goes...

    TRUE NORTH

In a lot of ways, Mason had led a careless life. At seventeen, he let the passion of his young blood get the better of him. A few months later he was staring fatherhood straight in the face. It was too much to handle, too soon. He tried keeping mum about the situation for as long as he could. When his parents found out, there was a lot of arguing. They wanted him to go to college. Her parents wanted them to get married. That spring, his son was born. Everything seemed to be spiraling out of control. He ran from the girl and straight into the army soon after his eighteenth birthday.

Basic training was hell. In some ways, he was glad he didn't know what he was up against before he joined. But the funny thing was, it taught him to be strong and to believe in his own abilities. Before he knew it, he was on MP detail in the middle of godforsaken Iraq. There was nothing but dust and rubble everywhere he looked. That, and the desperate people who peered out from shattered windows and doorless entryways. Some acted relieved to see them. Others jeered and shook their fists. But it didn't seem to matter what they did; he and his buddies would always be the Outsiders to these people.

He had been there for three months when his best friend Mike lost his life. Mike had been in the Humvee ahead of Mason's when it had driven over a land mine. He was killed instantly in the explosion. Mason wrote a personal letter to Mike's next of kin: his father, stepmother and kid brother. Earlier on, they had been in one of the cities during heavy gunfire and shelling. He told them about Mike's selflessness and uncommon valor as he rescued small children from a collapsed and burning building. Back at the base, Mike's empty bunk left him feeling hollow inside.

Eventually he got home and looked up his old flame. She had married some other guy. He didn't want to get in the way, and what was the use? His son would grow up calling some other man "Daddy". The hollow place inside grew. Hell, these days it felt like the Grand Canyon. What do you do when you feel too old to be young? Mason bought a Harley, pointed the thing west and rode. He kept on going until around midnight, then stopped at a roadhouse, weary to the bone. There were a few late night stragglers playing pool in the back. A juke box was singing about one last dance with Mary Jane. After a couple of beers, he settled down in a room they had out back. For the first time in a long time, he lay motionless in a deep sleep undisturbed by dreams.

When he rose in the morning it was barely daylight. Waking up in Reno felt kind of surreal. The air was expectant, waiting. The only sounds on the breeze came from occasional muted traffic a couple of streets away. Then there were sounds of crows arguing over breakfast. A few diminishing stars winked overhead. He thought the brightest one might be Venus. It reminded him of that little poem he had recited as a child. Star light, star bright, first star I see tonight... The first star was always the wishing star. Well, what the hell, he thought. So far, I've done everything else bass ackwards. He turned toward it and made three wishes. The first one was healing for Mike's family. The second one was joy for his son. And the third one... well, that was for himself. He wished for guidance and a fresh start. Even though the morning star was vanishing on the horizon, he thought of it as his turning point. He would make it the icon of his new beginning. The boy who ran away had finally turned into a man. He realized now that he had found his True North amidst grief and loss. He was through running. A red dawn began to blossom against the pale sky. He smiled as its warmth washed over his face. Then, he stashed his things in a leather satchel, strapped it to the Harley and put on his helmet. He turned his motorcycle toward the rising sun. It was time to begin his life facing forward.

You Communist traitor who sold us out on a Red Dawn.Your next of kin must have disowned you by now. You spit on the uncommon valar of brave vets and praise Castro.

If I had three wishes, I'd send you to a roadhouse in Cuba. You pitiful icon of treason.

The youngbloods , waking up in Reno, will stop you in the end, Mr Can't Work A Real Job.
