Top 10 QB's of all time - Please give reasoning?

1. Joe Montana - Guy had possibly the best supporting cast in the history of the NFL, but hey - 4 rings, great stats for the amount of time he played.

2-4. 3 players 'relatively' tied - Elway/Favre/Marino - Quite possible to make a case for any of them to be #1 - but they can be switched 2/3/4 easily.

5. Johnny Unitas - Revolutionized the QB position, not superb stats compared to today's greats, but the game has changed alot.

6-9. Next 4 can be changed around easily too - Graham, Tarkenton, Fouts, Kelly

10. Many people can make a claim for this place.. Bradshaw, Aikman, Young, Staubach, Moon.. I can't just choose one, but they would make up the next few.

Obviously, by the time (Peyton) Manning and Tom Brady are done with their careers, it seems like they will make the list. They could be included now, for some things, but they still have a ways to go til they are done.

I realize some people categorize QB's by championship - but, by that logic, Trent Dilfer is better than Marino...

Update:

Ran out of space to give a bit more reasoning, but that's the gist of the list. One person can't win a championship, as can be seen by Marino's career.

Update 2:

I only rate Montana #1 BECAUSE it is common to rate all time great (QB's) by the SB rings they have. I really don't know WHY people do this, as football is a team game, but, hey, if we have to take it into that much consideration, he's #1.

As for people talking about all the INT's Favre threw - yes, he threw alot, mainly coming from his gunslinger mentality and the length of his career. But, most people compare TD's to INT's - so, if you do that, Favre comes off better than some of the other most revered QB's - for example, he has a better TD:INT ratio than: Tarkenton, Aikman, Elway, Unitas, Moon, Staubach, Bradshaw, Kelly, Graham, Fouts, etc. I could go on, but these are all guys that ARE legends. Numbers don't always work - at times, you have to look at ratios.

    1) John Elway: Elway was a great QB could do it all w/no talent, led Denver to 5SB winning 2

    2) Montana: WINNER, Can't aargue w/4SB and the abilty to win in the clutch

    3) Favre: Favre has a championship and has passed Marinos numbers giving him a faint faint edge

    4) Marino: With more talent he could've won several SB's but woulda, shoulda coulda

    5) Unitas: A pioneer in football history

6-10) Take your pick: Young, Kelly, Grahm, Fouts, Brady, Peyton, Tarkerton, Bradshaw, Staubach, Aikman, Starr,

    1. Johnny Unitas - Watch some film of him on ESPN Classic. Compare his play to anyone else's, and Johnny wins. Can't go by stats. Plus, he won more than Montana did.

    2. Montana - If you watch him, he flat-out played at a higher level than the other guys on the field

    3. Brett Favre - Take any ten people, and Brett Favre, and you had a great shot at winning the game. Its really just that simple.

    4. Marino - Was the sole reason for any win Miami had during his career

    5. Tarkenton - Another gritty player, and a great runner

    6. Steve Young - If that concussion hadn't shortened his career, he might've made people forget about Joe Montana forever, being that he would've outlasted Jerry Rice, and still showed success

    7. Sammy Baugh - Pretty much invented the modern quarterback; his playing changed the game.

    8. Randall Cunningham - He's pretty much on this list for the same reason Baugh is; he began a revolution with a real "running" quarterback, and paved the way for a lot of the guys in the league today

    9. Bradshaw - Phenomenal throwing talent; put it this way, he was so good that he played on a "Run first" team, and still gets mentioned in these discussions

    10. Tom Brady - Plays at a higher level than anyone else in the league, with (for the most part) lesser talent around him; beats out Fouts, Staubach, and Elway by a hair

Some of my picks, or the order I put them in, may seem odd, but I am trying to evaluate talent, not just stats and wins. That's why Aikman isn't on here, and why Johnny U is ahead of Montana. Aikman was just a caretaker for an incredibly talented team; no defensive coordinator ever looked at the schedule at messed their pants at the thought of playing Aikman as much as they would about playing the entire Cowboys offense.

Johnny Unitas- Voted QB for the NFL's All-Time team. Consistently rated number one by every major sports network, and magazine. Still holds several NFL records, including most consecutive games with a TD pass.

Peyton Manning- currently has passed Montana, Elway, Bradshaw, and Marino in many categories. Is on track to break virtually every QB record within the next 4 years. Also, he and Harrison have broken virtually every QB/WR tandem record. He also holds most of the ProBowl QB records.

    Brett Favre

    Dan Fouts-statistically, he was superb.

    Joe Montana

    Dan Marino

    Terry Bradshaw

    1. Joe Montana, 4 rings, dominate

    2. Brady, Three Rings, wins with no talent around him, most Td's in a season, 16 and 0 regular season, still only 30 years old.

    3. Marino, First of the modern day qbs, Most Yards in season

    4. Aikman, He took a bunch of players who were written off and supposed to not be great and made them great. Emmitt was too small and too slow, Michael wasn't supposed to be dominate, their offensive line was terrible before he get in Dallas, he elevated the play of everyone on the offensive side of the ball and he has 3 rings

    5. Bradshaw

    6. Johnny Unitas, 1st great qb, set the standard

    7. Farve, 3 time Mvp

    8. Peyton Manning, 2 mvps turned around a terrible colts team. master of the hurry up offense.

    9. Elway

    10. Kelly

Well I'm not going to rate 10 but I will rate number 1. Brett Favre. You wanna know why. Look at his stats. They are better than any other QB ever, or at least most of them. Some people think that Joe Montana or other QB's should be the best but no. Yes they have won more superbowls, but look at the players Joe Montana had. Jerry Rice plus more, alot more. Did Brett Favre have 1 single Hall of Fame player on his offense. No he did it almost single handedly. I do understand that Joe Montana didn't play for as long as Brett or Elway, but shouldn't the best QB off all time be based on the final outcome of their stats not what we think they could have had or how good his stats were for the amount of time he played. Plus Brett Favre is one of the most humble men you will ever meet. I hope I changed your point of view. Thank You

    1. Marino - Like you stated 1 guy cant win championships. IF marino had Rice,Taylor,Craig, Lott etc...he wins how many?

    2. Montana - Has the rings

    3. Brady - Just like Montana has the rings, but to me has done it with FAR LESS talent then montana

    4. Elway - Was the comeback kid, and finally once he got Terrell Davis he won 2 superbowl's.

    5. Peyton Manning - He's still playing but has 1 SB ring, and will soon break Favre's records.

    6. Favre- Maybe the most overrated QB in my mind, but has won the superbowl, and broke all Marino's records, but had to play 17 seasons... Also threw alot of INT's.

    7. Unitas - He did what he had to..made the QB posistion what it is today

    8. Roger Staubach - The guy was amazing with what he did.

    9. Dan Fouts -

    10. Tarkenton-

Brett Favre is the greatest of all time he played at the highest level for longer then anyone else that has won a championship, im ruling marino out cause he never won the big one, dont get me wrong he is one of the best but he didnt win, favre holds every major record and his love for the game is unmatched

  • Favre is number 1

Superbowl rings don't define a QB that is a team effort.
