    journeyman can do 1/6 of the job in an hour. apprentice can do 1/8 of the job in an hour.

    1/6+1/8 = 14/48 = 7/24

    combined rate is 7/24 of the job in an hour.

    So to get the whole job done, 1job / (7/24job/hour) = 24/7 hours

    24/7 hours

    seven hours. this is called the average you add up all the numbers [6+8 = 16] then divide by the number of numbers in this case only two numbers being 8 and 8 so .. [14/2 = 7]

    Rate l Time l Work

    JourneyM. 1/6 l x l x/6

    apprentice 1/8 l x l x/8

    X/6 + X/3= 1

    LCD: 12

    12 [x/6 + x/3]=1 (12)

    2x+4x=12

    4x=12

    4[4x=12]4

    x=3

    answer: 3 hours

    hmm...

    if the painter can do the job in 6 hours, then it means in one hour, he can do1/6th of the job...

    same with his apprentice who can do 1/8th of the job in one hour...

    so, when they work together, they both can do 1/6 + 1/8 = 7/24 part of the job in one hour...

    so, they both can finish the job in 24/7 hours...
