How do I solve 3 (x + 20) + (x + 20) + x = 180?
I am reading my math book and trying very hard to solve this problem but I am very challenged when it comes to Algebra. My book has the answer so I am not just looking for a freebie but a way to solve these types of problems so that I can do it on my own. Again I appreciate the help given :)

3 (x + 20) = 3x + 60
equation is 3x + 60 + x + 20 + x = 180
collect terms: 5x + 80 = 180
5x - 80 = 180 - 80
5x = 100
x = 100 / 5
x = 20
Substituting into equation answer 20 we get;
3 ( 20 + 20 ) + ( 20 + 20 ) + 20 = 180
3 x 40 + 40 + 20 = 180
120 + 40 + 20 = 180
180 = 180

To solve 3(x+20)+(x+20)+x=180
solution:
firstly open the brackets
3x + 60 + x + 20 + x = 180
collect like terms
3x + x + x = 180 - 60 - 20
5x = 100
x = 100/5
x = 20

firstly u need to distribute 3(x + 20) and get 3X + 60 and + with x + 20 + x....u need to separate between the x and the number..so it'll be like this
3x + 60 + x + 20 + x =180
combine the x's, 3x + x + x =5x
then combine the number,60 + 20=80
now u get 5x + 80 = 180
then u bring the 80 to the right,the '+' will change into '-' so ull get.....5x=180 - 80
solve the minus operation..5x =100
now u need to get x,it has to be alone that means
x =100/5...
so x is 20....
p/s: u have to do it carefully and always think,its just a simple question.....gud luck

There are algebraic rules of sequence (the order in which you perform the indicated calculations) - for instance, if there are no parentheses present, one would do multiplication and division first and then do addition and subtraction. (E-mail me if you want a better example of this.)
In your example, the presence of parentheses doesn't make any real difference, but you should keep the concept in mind. But here is what your formula really means:
3 (x + 20) = 3*x + 3*20 = 3x + 60
So the full expression is:
3x + 60 + x + 20 + x = (3x + x +x) + (60 +20) = 5x + 80
Setting that expression back into the equality:
5x + 80 = 180
Subtracting 80 from both sides:
5x = 100
Divide both sides by 5:
x = 20

First, distribute the 3 into the (x+20) and get:
3x + 60 + x + 20 + x = 180
On the left side, 60+20 = 80, and on the right side, you have 180. So subtract 80 from both sides:
3x + x + x = 100
Now combine ''like terms'' , like the x's on the left:
5x = 100
Now divide both sides by 5, because you need x by itself:
x = 20
Good luck!

3 (x + 20) + (x + 20) + x = 180
3x + 60 + x + 20 + x = 180 -expanding
= 3x + x + x + 60 + 20 =180 -Grouping like terms
5x + 80 = 180
5x = 180 - 80
5x = 100
x = 100/5 =20

3 (x + 20) + (x + 20) + x = 180
3x + 60 + x + 20 + x = 180
3x + x + x = 180- 60 -20
5x = 100
x = 100/5
x = 20

3x + 60 + x+ 20+ x =180
5x + 80 =180
5x = 180 - 80
5x = 100
x = 20
p/s:do you know that the number inside of the brackets hav to be times with the number outside of the bracket
*2(y + 9)..means...2 x y.=2y.and 2 x 9.=18..so the overall answer for this example is ..= 2y + 18

3 * (x+20) is:
3*x=3x
3*20=60
(x+20)=x+20
3x + 60 + x + 20 +x =180
Add all the like terms.
5x+80=180
Subtract 80 from both sides.
5x=100
Divide by 5.
x=20
