Mythbusters has proven that that rule is not true. It gets the same amount of crap on it whether it has been on the ground for one sec or twenty mins.

Does Santa Clause exist too?
The '5 second rule' in theory is supposedly so because if you drop a piece of food it won't be contaminated by bacteria if its on the floor for less than 5 seconds.
In reality, there is already bacteria on the food from the person who prepared it, in your mouth, and also airborne.
So, I just go by the '24 hour rule'.

Why not test it yourself? Go stand in a sand box, or something similar to one, drop a lollipop for 5 seconds, then decide if you still want to eat the thing.

It's an old wives tale.
Any piece of food that doesn't have a shell or casing that would be pealed off, should be thrown away if it hits the floor.
