Has anyone here had to care for a dog with 2 broken legs?!?!?

It is very hard work, for the owner as well as the dog. It takes at least 4 weeks of keeping the dog "still" and not walking around. You have to pick them up and carry them outside to potty, carry them back in, wipe their butt and tail and legs off every time they potty because they cannot squat down and go, and then you have to carry them to their food, make sure they don't move around while they eat, give them pain meds several times a day etc etc etc every day for weeks!!! It is very hard on the dog!!!

Yes, you did the right thing.... Just wanted to add that even if all that was wrong was 2 broken legs, it IS enough reason to put a dog down.

Nekai Wow, you are rich and should count all your money for us!!! We love to hear how much money everyone else has!!! Do you really think telling others how much YOU have means that we have it too? WHY would you pay so much for a GOAT?!? I didn't pay that much for one that was pregnant with triplets!

WOW Alpha to golden--- I have 2 handicap kids/siblings. You probably don't have kids yourself. Please, neuter yourself before you do! Don't be so insulting!!!

Don't take the hard answers to heart.

I'm sure you done as best you could & would have done more if possible! (I note sometimes people are very quick on the assumptions here)

If the cost was mega & there is no way you could pay for it & there was no other help available to you from friends, family, local or national services (I'm assuming the vet would have provided some insight into further options also for you guys to consider & that they were not feisible).

Also - I can understand your sis wanting to perhaps bury her dog on her own & have their last time together - I wouldn't take that as a personal attack either.

Its nice you are there for your sister & you done what you could.

I think it will depend on how bad he was traumatized by the incident. My pit-lab mix had a table top that was leaned against the wall and it fell over on her. She was about 6 months old at the time and she is now 3 years old. She is still scared to death of anything that is leaned against a wall. We used to lean a very light baby gate against the wall to keep her out of the living room and she will not go near it. I do think she will remember your dad and be leary of him if he hurt Bruiser, but I doubt your dad will hurt him again. I bet he keeps his distance, but as you know dogs are very forgiving. Personally I wouldn't want to make extra trips. I think he will be okay for one night.

It's her dog and her choice how to handle the burial. It was very generous of you to help. If your sister cannot handle the financial responsibility of dog ownership, she should wait until she can before she gets another dog. To my knowledge, some vet offices will treat a dog in a life or death situation if the owner surrenders ownership in the event that he or she can't afford treatment. I would much sooner surrender my ownership to any of my dogs than sacrifice them because I just didn't have the money to save their lives. I'm sorry for you and your sister's loss but it was a learning experience.

Sorry but i don't think you did the right thing! Hasn't your sister got a mind of her own? Obviously not - she should not get another dog until she can support it and stick up for its rights! The vet who destroyed her dog just for two broken legs should be struck off, please post his name and address so we can all report him to his governing body - he's a disgrace to his profession, it will also keep others away from his surgery! Your sister will soon realise that she shouldn't have listened to you and if she holds it against you and never speaks to you again then you'll know that she's thinking straight!

I think you did the right thing.

Bless your heart you tried to help. Let her deal with the dogs death the way she has to. We all do it different. Besides taking care of a dog that doesn't have use of his legs is a big job & if he was a big dog it would be almost impossible to take care of him properly. How would you get him in the potty position? Would you have had to carry him in & out of the house.

It's not just the money. It is also the ability to take care of a dog with two casts on his legs & possibly his hips too.

Although very heart breaking, it was, in my opinion, the right thing to do.

I hope you carry no guilt over this.

I have had to have pets put to sleep cause the cure was so expensive. Yeah, people critized me but I had absolutely no choice.

    Edit:

Don't let some of these answers get the best of you. They have never been in a position to where they had no choice. Self righteous folks with money.

well, puting down a pet is hard, i had to put down my leopard gecko of 7 years. but some times its the right thing to do.

after i spent over $600 to get him better he was to far over

and needed to go to his real home. its really sad i know.

and just cuz you paid to put the dog down doesnt mean she cant do it alone some times to easyer to say good bye to a pet alone.

maybe if she is ready and you have the money/time/will to take care of a new puppy, maybe get her a new one at your local shelter.

i hate to see money being the death of another pet.

but it already happend so theres nothing you can do about it now. but if it was me i would have gotten a money loan or sold something to get that dog better. but thats just me.

you put a dog down for 2 broken legs? I don't know what vet would do that. There had to be other problems..also there could have been ways you could pay, like credit care and other assistance like a local humane society.

    why didn't she pay?

Well it's her dog it's up to her. She didn't know anybody else with money that could help her?

You were wrong - oh Cher----- all that care you mentioned being a big burden.....kind of sounds like a handicapped child. If this were your child would you euthanize? My dog is a part of my family not just a "pet". with all the money I may have to pay and with all the time I would have to actually spent with the dog is worth it to me.

Could you have surrendered the dog over to the vet due to lack of money?
