do you hate reading long poems?

Sandburg never wrote more than 6 stanzas at the most. Shakespeare's sonnets where only 18 lines. Why do student poets write such long poems? Don't they know short ones make them easier to read?

Update:

And for them to drone on and on in self piety and negativity just turns the reader off. Where do they get their idea to write such self-centered dribble?

It's a matter of inspiration. I write long poems and I write short poems. I enjoy reading both. Poetry is an extension of the writer.

Carl Sandburg's poem "The People, Yes" is 178 pages long in the copy I have of his collected poems; he was wise enough to divide it into a lot more than six stanzas. Sonnets have fourteen lines, not eighteen. Shakespeare often incorporated verse into his plays. His poems "Venus and Adonis" and "The Rape of Lucrece" are 27 and 40 pages long in The Norton Shakespeare. In other words, your examples are grossly inaccurate! I love those long poems and many others. Sometimes brevity is best, but the worth of many poems lies in the level of complexity that greater length allows.

The longest poem I've ever written was 21 lines. Robert Frost wrote some long poems. But I like reading his.

    1) they are unable to express themselves in shorts phrases

    2) there is no limit to the length of a poem ( the poem the Titanic is a whole book long)

    3) it's easier to decribe things in long poems

    4) thats the style they like

look at shakespear and poe, they weren't all sunshine and rainbows either. some people prefer to write about reality instead of idealistic sh*t. poety can be an outlet for agony. but i agree about the length ordeal, i despise long poems. I hate it even more when people feel the need to make every freaking word rhyme! poetry is not about rhyming!!! its about good flow and conveying emotion! to me anyways, excessive rhyming annoys me to no end. and the dark emotional negativity can be pulled off if it's done right.

thats a nice poem. I'm sure you're parents will like it. but you should give it to your language arts teacher for maybe some extra credit.
