How risky is it when your IP address is revealed?
Let's say someone reveals my IP address. Can such person use my IP address to find where I live, such as my physical home address?
I understand the IP address will show where I live, like my state and what ISP I use. But can a person use my IP address to knock on my front door without Law's permission?

Your IP address can tell a person EXACTLY where you live (or even where your computer is). Every single second you are on the Internet your IP address is visible (unless your use a 'proxy sever' - google it)
Firstly-your have an external and an internal IP address-yes that's right, 2 IP addresses
The external is used by severs, websites and things that mainly concern the Internet. Unless someone specifically targets your IP address then you don't need to worry (the number of hackers looking at IP addresses over all the people on the Internet-that's the risk)
If a hacker gets INSIDE your computer and grabs your internal IP address, then your in trouble cause then they know your phone number and personal address, that why firewalls are an essential. A firewall should keep your safe from those attacks anyway. But yes, if someone is absolutely determined to "get you". If they have enough experience and knowledge, they can hack you and get your IP and drive to the front of your house..(and eat your children...lol)...and knock on your front door. But you have more of a chance of finding a 1 billion cheque in your dogs food bowl.
Don't worry about it!

While I think it's possible to get a location from an IP Address, a random person could probably only trace the IP to the company that provides you with Internet, but I don't think it goes further than that. You can probably only get an exact location from the company if you have some serious matter, like trying to get information about a felony or great crime.

I guess that a good hacker could find that kind of info through the ISP, but I'm on the secondary computer on an encrypted home network. I've also got the firewalls, filters, and security settings on my computer itself. It seems to me, it wouldn't be worth all the work. I mean, if someone showed at the door, for what purpose? I don't belong to any extremist groups, and doubt I would be a target for much of anything. As far as the Law is concerned, if someone knocked on my door to harass, it would be like any other harassment and it would be dealt with accordingly.

to a certain extent...maybe. most isp's use a dynamic ip address so whenever you turn your modem off or your computer/router, you can release and renew your ip. from what i've seen, you can basically only tell a city if you're willing to spend some money or have a connection with some big people. as far as knocking on your door, well...depends on what you're doing...

They can get your general vicinity and city....and they can use a port scanner to scan your computer for vulnerabilities and attack your computer if you don't have the right security(firewall, etc). They can also find things out such as what operating system you working with and some other minor details such as that. Websites can find these things out instantly when you visit them and often log them for security purposes.
Look into a "proxy"....

With respect to the people collectively named as 'geeks', I they if they had your IPS address, then it is possible they could locate you at your residential address, or the address you use if it is at work.
Legally the IPS are protected by law, and it takes a legal injunction for them to reveal such information to a legal authority such as the FBI if they had reason to believe you were a terrorist or wanted criminal.

well i am an ethicle hacker and as one it is pretty dangerous because if they get your ip address they can pull up your info right from there computer and can get your number by calling your isp and it's just not safe in my case i would use php proxies sometimes even thoughs won't help you because they could just call where ever that proxy is located and get your actuell ip from there so just watch what site you visit...

No, unless your ISP reveals your contact if somebody gives them your IP. But this would be illegal.
