Does daughter in college qualify as dept?

Does my daughter who attends college qualify as an exemption for tax purposes? I believe since she doesn't live here more than six months of the year, she probably doesn't. I only pay her books and a small stipend monthly.

Look at these links - they are important. If you can claim her, you surely need to!

This is to see if she is a "qualifying child":

This is to see if she is a "qualifying relative" (in the case she does not qualify as a "qualifying child"):

And, the others are correct, in that, a child away from home for school is a temporary absence that qualifies as time living with you.

Time temporarily away living at college counts as living with you. If she's a full time student under age 24, and doesn't provide over half of her own support, she probably qualifies as a dependent. But tuition counts as support, so if she's paying that herself, and her living expenses at school, she might be providing over half of her own support so would not be your dependent.
