I am torn on this question .

there are more good reason why yes is the answer.

No peer pressure to wear the "IN" thing when the famly can not afford them and then the child is not accepted by his/her peers.

Makes it simple to decide what to wear to school that day

A lot less expensive for parents as they only have to buy a certain number of outfits to get through a week.

The administration is not forced to decide what is acceptable dress and what is not based solely on their standards. If you are out of uniform you are out of school .

I had a couple of no it isn't a good idea

    only can remember one

The students can't express or dress to their individual styles

which normally is whatever every one else is wearing so I guess yes would be the answer.....

I love the uniforms, it has shown dramatic differences in our students confidence and grades. There are arguments that kids need to express themselves and uniforms don't allow that, but school is their job, and what they need to express in school is that they are a student. And if you don't want them to express that, maybe you really don't care about their academic achievements. Uniforms are ugly, they make a 13 year old look like their 12 instead of 17 (like the clothes they prefer), and uniforms are like a constant reminder that you're where you work because they would never where them when they're not working. And that's exactly what makes them so great. As adults, I think most of us forget how difficult it is to be 12 years old. Yesterday, my uniformed students got to wear crazy hair/hat day with their uniforms... and they all did great crazy things. They were so excited at the beginning of the day with the excitement and change that by the end of the day they were almost crying because they were so tired. The excitement of the day was just too much... and that's just from wearing a fuzzy hat and doing math work. The more we can focus students on learning, the more they will be able to learn.

We have had both at our school and I must say I like the students wearing uniforms. There are days that they can have free dress and Friday's they can wear jeans and their perfect attendance tee shirts, For us it is beneficial to have uniforms because most of our families can't afford to keep up with the style that the students who have money can. Clothing becomes a status statement and it really does distract the learning environment. As a teacher I have far less problems now that we have uniforms. I know at the high school they have shirts they have to wear, but they can wear whatever bottoms they choose I am shocked at how some kids come to school.

People say that they loose their "individuality" but that is so not true. You have many other opportunities outside of school to be an individual. School unfortunately not the place to make a clothing statement.

Yes, but there should be an ample variety of combinations to choose from. School isn't a fashion show. School isnt about going there to see who is wearing what and chastizing those who are either too poor to be "in" or don't care about what is considered "fashionable" or those who deviate from the norm. I hardly think clothes make you the person you are. You are who you are with uniforms or without. People say wearing uniforms will strip those of their individuality, when in reality, very few young people are original anyways because they all want to look like everyone else.

In Los Angeles, California, some schools are requiring students to wear uniforms because their students had contests on who was wearing the coolest (usually the most expensive) clothes. This created a lot of envy that occasionally would break out into fighting.

Requiring uniforms levels the sartorial playing field. This is a good thing.

The clothes are cheap and durable. Children who can't afford them can usually find people who will give them these uniforms.

Yes. It cuts down on competition or children feeling ashamed or being picked on because they don't have the latest brand of sneakers.

I personally wish teachers could wear uniforms too. I hate trying to find something to wear every morning.

Yes. It would eliminate many problems: dress code questions (baggy pants, too much skin, logos, etc.) that take far too much administrative time away from education-related issues, students judging one another based on how well they dress (maybe shift the focus more to how they behave toward one another), make getting ready for school easier (fewer morning choices!), in most cases, it would save parents money to buy uniforms instead of brand-name items kids are so in love with

No. Dress is a kind of self-expression, choosing one's clothes is one of the earliest choices kids make as they learn to make decisions for themselves, kids need to learn to deal with differences

Overall: yes. It eliminates more problems than it causes.

Most schools in the UK suggest that kids where a uniform - if nothing else it stops the bullying because a poor kid doesnt have the right trainers and stuff. Plus it makes you look smart and get ready for how to dress when you go to work.

I think they are a great idea.
