The water you are using has some dissolved minerals that settle out as the water mist evaporates. The only way to stop this is to use a water source that has little or no mineral content such as distilled or de-ionized water, or to install a resin exchanger.
Thyere are lotsa water treatment companies (Calgon, for example) that can recommend a fix.

if you open up the humidifier, you will see that there is a gray sort of stone inside. if you have been using the humidifier for a long time, junk and minerals from your water can build up on that stone, because it sits directly in the water. give it a good wipe and see if that helps. also try using purified water instead of regular tap water.
