No, I've been a Virgin Media customer for 6 years(from when it was Telewest Broadband) and I can count on one hand the number of outages I've had in that time. As for speed, I generally find that I get pretty much the speed I pay for although with any ISP you're going to get variations in response speed at busy times. I suggest you contact their helpdesk regarding the disconnection issue though.
There's some truth in Virgin's claims to be better than Sky in that unlike Sky they do not put a cap on how much you can download, nor do they rely on BT lines as they have their own fibreoptic network.
You see, the simple fact is that most ISPs don't have their own network so consequently the further you are away from the BT exchange the less likely you are to get the quoted speeds.
That's something they don't tell you in the advertising blurb, still if Sky works for you then fine...to each his own.

I generally don't have a problem. Sometimes it seems very slow. I don't usually lose the connections but the speed is irritating at times. When I lose connection turning of the modem for a minute seems to sort it out.

No it's not just you, I have that problem too. And of course they'll do nothing about it, I spend a fortune speaking to their "technical" team and what happens? Nothing. I could get a technician to come out but I doubt they'd be able to arrange it properly (last time I booked someone to come out, for the phone, the virgin staff weren't able to understand the simple concept of saying thursday is better than saturday).
I'm sorry to say it but you're screwed. Even if a bloke did come out he'd blame it on everything that wasn't Virgin. The fact is Virgin are a manifestation of ultimate incompetence, morons the lot of them. I'm stuck in a contract with them (depsite never signing or seeing a contract) 'til september but then I'm changing quickly. I hope they get bombed by terrorists (seriously, in my eyes they deserve it, just as British Gas do).
I'm going now cos even thinking about them makes me furious, so good luck, you'll need it.

The only slow-down we get is when my son starts streaming! He manages to grab the entire bandwidth every time!
Apart from that, occasionally the bearer locks up and we have to reboot the connexion, but that is SOP on multiplexed cable.......... I'll not go into stress alarms and the like.......
I do not LIKE Virgin (NTL that was) but the service is OK.

We get occassional slow periods, and I have been kicked off a few times recently, but generally it works brilliant. Far better than the rubbish service we got from BT!
