How do I ask for the day off at work for health related reasons?
I work at a relatively small company where all of my superiors are men. After having a well woman's exam i've learned that I have abnormal cell growth and may be endanger of having cervical cancer. I initially had to take off from work to have the well womans exam and then i had to take off a few hours on another day to have some blood work done. I have an appointment wednesday and need to tell my boss that i need the whole day off to have a pelvic ultrasound done and a copolscopy to have a part of my cervix removed...the last time i mentioned to my boss that i neeeded time off he kind of laughed and said, wow you sure do spend a lot of time at the docotor in a jokingly way... when i explained that the doctor needed me for a follow up he said it was fine.... the point is that without sharing too much information i would like for my boss to get the idea that i wouldnt be taking off from work if it were not important and i need a way to tell him that i need off.
Unfortunately, since it is such a small company we dont really have an HR department.
I appreciate everyone's kind words and help with this question.
Thanks!

Tell him you have female issues and ask if he wants you to go into detail. I guarantee that will stop him in his tracks and he probably won't question it going forward.

Yeah, it might not be something that you want to do in giving him too much information. But honestly, sometimes there is no other way, not only that, even if he is a man and this is something you don't want to share with him he should be human enough to understand that it is serious.
Tell him that you are getting a copolscopy done and that you need the whole day off. Seriously, if he were in your shoes and you were in his, you would understand if he came to you and said that he needed the day off for a doctor appointment because he might have prostate cancer.
BTW, so sorry you're going through this, hope all goes well and good luck!

Just say that there is a serious appointement that you have to attend to at the doctors, if he asks why, say that it may endanger your health & that it is confidential, if he trys to pry at it more, tell him that you will only tell him that much, if the guy won't let you take off the day for any of those reasons, quit..I mean, seriously, if the guy won't let a poor woman go to see if she might have cervical cancer, honestly...
Anyway, you are in my prayers, Good luck & Hope that I helped!!

Legally you can take personal time off for medical reasons as long as you have PTO left. You can even take PTO in advance if the company agrees to it.
Men are dumb, most managers became managers not because they were good at it, but for other reasons e.g. trust, submission etc.
Tell them that you are sorry, but you have surgery done, and you need to take time off. They will still joke, remain serious.
If you are in a state which allows at will employment, then they can fire you for any reason. Usually they will pick a reason other than your frequent doctor appointments e.g. you didn't get your work done in time.
Take care of yourself, you will change your job many times in your life, your body you have only once.

Something like that is covered by FMLA. Go to the human resources dept and get the forms or get them from your doctor. They will give you protection and you will have the legal right to see the dr. whenever you need.

tell him you might get cervical cancer and you need to be of work a bit that would make him be serious and proberly to embarred to talk to you about it and it would make him let you have as much time of as you wanted

you just need to say that you have a doctor's appt and it is confidential. they shouldn't be prying you for information. if they are, talk to HR. good luck!
