'95 Volvo 850 Turbo w/115k miles, does the thermostat need replacing?

A couple of weeks ago, I had to replace a return hose, because coolant was leaking out of it. The car didn't overheat at all, because I noticed it right away. After the hose was replaced and new coolant was put in the tank, I started noticing the temperature gauge fluctuate at times, anywhere from 1/4 to 3/4. It doesn't fluctuate erratically, it just goes up 3/4 way then a few minutes later could be only 1/4 way up or so. It used to stay at about the halfway mark before the incident and never did that. I was wondering if this is an indication that the thermostat is bad or I need a new radiator?

Thermostat failures are very common on Volvo. Being a Volvo owner myself I would say "replace it'.Should not cost that much to have it done.

I would replace it just in case I have 850 glt and I have noticed slighter than your's fluctuations and have let it go. but such large flucuations could be either a bad thermostat or a precursor to much bigger problems.

if the thermostat doesnt fix the problem, you could try to flush the radiator too
