Was the United States the aggressor in the Cold War?

If you do think the US was the aggressor, why? Or if you think the Soviet Union was the aggress, why?

Thank you so much for the help!

No. The USSR broke all of the agreements that it had made at Potsdam and Yalta, and put down rebellions with armed force.

Post World War II, both sides split up Germany, and its capital, Berlin. Of course, Berlin was in East Germany, so there was this enclave of West Germany in East Germany. The Soviets did not like this. They increased pressure to try to get the west (U.S., U.K. and France) to give up their half of Berlin. Read up on the "Berlin Airlift" (I'm sure Wikipedia has some good info on it).

This is, in my opinion, the event that started of the cold war. It was perciptated by the Soviet Union. Now that's not to say that in the process that the west didn't occasionally up the ante here and there. One could argue that the U.S. took a more agressive posture in Korea and Viet Nam. But if you are looking for a "who started it", look to Stalin.

The Soviets are the ones who put missiles in Cuba and called for the destruction of Western Imperialism, I think they were the aggressors.

They were mutual aggressors really. The US started meddling in foreign affairs after WW2 and were quite vocal about spreading Democracy. At the same time the USSR was seizing control of any territory they could through puppet Communist governments and were actually supporting communist revolts.

So, they were natural enemies and distrusted each other immediately. In fact they could barely cooperate during WW2, but they were more scared of Nazi Germany than each other.

Both were pretty aggressive. I'm taking a International Politics course and we've covered how regardless of whats best overall, you've got to do what make sense at the time.

Think about this, ideally, neither sides should make weapons. But does it make sense for you to not have any when you don't know and can't control whether or not the other side has weapons. It's only prudent that you arm yourself so that you are ready to protect yourself.

Neither was an actual aggressor. Both sides worked to avoid war - and succeeded.

yea, they were the ones who funded Bin Laden to fight the Soviet Union, They were the ones who went to spy on the soviets with their spy planes, They set up naval bases in the Philippines, Korea, Japan, Italy and almost every strategic ally in the west! they sent a Sattelite to space for defense!

Actually..it was all a farce set up by the respective military establishments of both sides. More threats....more $$$ for weapons
