No Claims Bonus on Provisional Licence?
Hi
Can your time spent driving with a provisional licence be counted towards a no claims bonus (if the car is in your name).
Also (sneaking in another question)
If i dont have insurance but im driving my car with a passenger who has insurance am i covered in the event of an accident.
Thanks
The reason for this is my nephew has just bought a car but only has a provisional licence, we were trying to find out how to be insured but for the least cost (not trying to avoid insurance, I have my own car which i am insured on)
Earnest does have a valid point, but its a theoretical question

Yes your time spent driving with a provisional licence does count towards your no claims bonus as long as you are the main policy holder. If you have been a named driver then some insurance companies will give you a discount when taking out a new policy in your own name.
If someone with a provisional/full licence drives your car then they must be insured to drive, either on your policy as a named driver or with another form of insurance. Allowing someone to drive your vehicle without insurance can get you points on your licence, as well as the uninsured driver getting points.
The cheapest way for your nephew to get car insurance would be to get someone else who's older and has a full licence (mum/dad/you) to insure the car in their name and put your nephew as a named driver - the car would then need to be registered in the policy holders name. Technically your nephew should not drive the car more than the policy holder otherwise it's considered to be 'fronting', but there is no way for insurance companies to tell who drives the car the most, or even if they drive it at all. Of course the downside of this is if your nephew has an accident then they will have to claim on the policy holders insurance, meaning higher insurance costs in the future.
A good company to try for young drivers and/or drivers with a provisional licence is Quinn Direct. If you use http://www.confused.com/ they will get a quote from Quinn Direct as well as many other insurance companies. It's also worth noting that Quinn Direct treat each full year as a named driver as a no claims bonus.
Good luck

You can only claim no claims bonus if the insurance is in your name.
If you are driving you must be insured,or your passenger must have an insurance for the car you are driving with you on the insurance as a named driver.

it is your responsibility to insure yourself if you do not have valid insurance even if your supervising driver does you will be prosecuted for having no insurance and you only earn no claims bonus for if you yourself are insured and dont claim against your insurance. for both of your questions you need to get insurance before you drive again

You know perfectly well that you are not legal by not having insurance or else you would not have asked the question, so why don't you buy it? Also your passenger is liable to get into trouble if you are caught because presumably he knows what you are up to; and if he does not he should have taken the trouble to find out.
People like you are part of the reason why drivers who abide by the law have to pay so much for their insurance!!!

No your time spent as provisional cant be counted since its a reward for qualified drivers. As a provisional driver u not yet qualified and u are still a learner.
