How many of you are dealing severe depression in these later years and how are you managing it?
Whoever said life begins at 40 was smoking crack. It began ok - to fall apart. I realize that's a negative statement for a Christian, but I'm now 54 and I hate getting old. To make it worse, I've gained a lot of weight. I can't do the things I used to be able to do. Even silly things like jumping on the trampoline with the grandkids or teaching my grandsons to stand on their heads like I taught my sons and granddaughters. Things hurt more. Places hurt more. I was once described as a formidable woman. I fear that woman is gone. My transition through Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs is not progressing well. Self actualization seems completely out of reach. With regard to death, I know to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. That's good. It's the time from now till then. Any words of wisdom out there?

wisdom, No. : ) Opinion, plenty!
You need to join a women's group!! There is safety in numbers, and you need the sunshine that leaving the house with like minded individuals can bring! Being 54 does not keep you from being strong or viable,or beautiful. It just doesn't! You my dear have work to do. Get your head out of the sand and into the light sister, you have at least 30 years left, and you dont want to spend them feeling like this.

l have been depressed since a child, l have been on meds, for 20years now, YAHOO, marvelous things, meds l mean, l also am around your age. Why do you hate growing old, its the natural way of life to age. Sure, l can not see as well as l did, my eyes see things all blurry now, l have gained a ton of weight, (size 24), l only admit to that because l do not know you or anyone else on this site, HA!!
l hurt like crazy at times, l had polio as a child, and my right side, arm, legs and hips are playing me up something awful, but l know and accept that is due to aging, but l also am wiser and happier than ever, l will go into a coffee shop and sit by myself and have coffee, l will talk to anyone, even myself and quite often in the street where l get odd glances at times, who cares, :). I would not want to be young again, l am enjoying the life l have now, it is a new stage, the change of life and all that !! Embrace life, wrinkles, bloody pain !, bad eyesight, being bolder and more wiser, live woman live!!
God has given you this time, enjoy it, even if we question why, he has a plan for us, and God never makes mistakes, trust in him. You know that.
As to death, what an exciting time to look forward to, we will all be at peace, no pain or worries, so girlfriend, quit complaining, think about others that have it 100's times more worst than you, peole with not enough food to eat, in war zones, seeing their babies go hungry, seeing their loved ones killed, for goodness sake, wake up and smell the roses.!!
God bless you girlfriend, l will be thinking of you and praying that you will see the light and shake yourself out of the doldrums that you are in.

Like me, you are now in your sixth decade of life. Believe me, things aren't gonna get any easier from here on out. About the only thing I can suggest to you is to lose a little of that extra weight. You'd be surprised how many other problems that can alleviate...

things certainly do change as we mature ,and its quite understandable to feel depressed over all these losses.i have just come out of my black tunnel by realising that whats gone is gone, and there are many good things coming my way .i have a little help from a homeopahtic remedy for deppresion,it's not habbit forming and you only use it when you need it instead of dreading retirement i now look foreward to it
