CALLING ALL ATHEISTS: Who was the first atheist?

For real, Who was the first? Like...ya...There really aren't any details to put with this lol. Do atheists give more stars than christians? Maybe that should be my next question. Back to the point...Was it like, one person, or was it like *BAM* and suddenly the word atheist appeared on a nametag? I'm confused.

Due to the fact that atheism itself is simply the lack of belief in a god, this mentality could have started anywhere, at any time, with any number of people. Consequently, atheism has no doctrine, figurehead, or rituals to identify it, or pass on, so it would be difficult, if not impossible, to determine a so called originator as there likely is none. The term "atheist" has it's roots in the Greek term atheos which means godless. The English term finds it's origin in the french word athéisme which is derived from the Greek word and modern day usage and definitions first came about sometime during the 1500's.

The question cannot be answered. All sentient beings upon birth do not have a belief in gods. Hence every living thing has always been an atheist.

Religion is taught and experienced via superstition and imagination.

There was a feller in the stone age called UG, he found a big lump of stone this 'lump' spoke to UG who passed the word about, this was God, so all the UG folk brought offerings . UG himself passed the messages from the lump to his people. He became a great leader.

There was a nasty little feller in the tribe of UG (he ate babies)! He was rumored to also kick little sabre tooth tiger kittens!

He couldn't hear the' lump' talking so he announced he thought it was a big con job, he went about the place saying nasty things like "Wug boll mug wap"! Which we have now translated to mean "There is no God" He was the first atheist, UG himself hated him, he spread rumors that any one not believing in the lump would not enter the big shiny bright lumps of rock in the sky!

But millions of years on, we atheists still survive .

We no longer laugh about religion, too many folk have died, and are still dying in its name!

His name was Uga Mugga, an ancient Caveman, who claimed that the earth was round and we revolved around the sun. He was also the founder of fire and the inventor of the wheel.

His life was later documented in a Hanna Barbera cartoon called Captain Caveman.

Nobody can really answer that. You think some scribe sat around waiting for someone to say he didnt believe in God, then wrote it down and then rushed off to the nearest hall of records to preserve it until we could read it in the year 2008?

You should live your life and try to make the world a better place for your being in it, whether or not you believe in God. If there is no God, you have lost nothing and will be remembered fondly by those you left behind. If there is a benevolent God, he may judge you on your merits coupled with your commitments, and not just on whether or not you believed in him.

I am not an atheust but i believe the American Atheist Movement in the States was started by Madeline Murray O'Hare. I recently saw a program on A&E about her movement and how it led to the murder of her and her son and granddaughter. Her other son left the movement and became a Christian.

We no longer have any records of the first person who didn't believe in gods, because atheism predates record keeping.

The word "atheist" was first used in ancient Greece, but I don't know to whom it was first applied.

  • A long time ago, when we first came down from the trees, someone looked up and said "what is that big yellow ball?". Someone else replied "It must be sun-god and he wants us to worship him!". The guy that clubbed him and said "don't be an idiot" was the first atheist.
