Confused about my PC monitor!?

I think my monitor might be dying, but I'm not sure - when I turn the PC on, the monitor stays black for ages and ages, and then it'll kind of fade up from black to the desktop, and the image is quite dark and flickery, then it'll keep going off and on, does anyone have any ideas as to why it's doing this? It's ok at the moment, but I'm scared to turn my PC off in case it happens again!!

you don't specify wether its the old CRT or new LCD type

if its the old type - it could be the lopt failing [line output transformer] or dry joints around its base

if you are going to try to repair it yourself, take great care - they generate thousands of volts!!! and the CRT tube acts as a capacitor and stores a great deal of that charge even when turned off for hours!

if its a newer LCD type, the screen contacts may not be "home" in the connectors or the bond to the LCD screen itself could be failing

if the latter is the case, you have no option but to get it repaired professionally or get a new one

1st thing to to is isolate the problem.

try connecting another monitor and see if the problem has gone.

Also check the leads from the monitor for loose connections.

If its not the monitor it could be a software issue or a fault with the graphics card.

try the on-board graphic card (if you dont use this one).

It the monitor a crt or lcd? how old? more info needed. What are the results for the above tests? then you will be very close to a correct answer.

If you turn off the base unit then on again but leave the monitor switch on. Does this still happen?

If you switch off then on the monitor but leave the base unit on does this problem happen?

But as an ex-electronics engineer I would say from your descriptions that its the monitor and it will fail comp0leatly soon.

Hope is not just over 1 year old and just outside its warranty.

  • Windows 95, 98, 2000, ME, XP, and the official release of Windows Vista also display a Black Screen of Death when the operating system cannot boot. This is usually due to a missing file. Often the user must reinstall Windows. If the missing file is critical to the boot process, however, more often than not the boot screen will inform the user of the missing file.A Blue Screen of Death (also known as a stop error, BSoD or bluescreen) is an error screen displayed by certain operating systems, most notably Microsoft Windows, after encountering a critical system error which can cause the system to shut down to prevent damage. Bluescreens can be caused by poorly written device drivers, faulty memory, a corrupt registry, an incompatible Dynamic-link library (DLL), or the computer overheating. Bluescreens have been present in all Windows-based operating systems since Windows 3.1; OS/2 and MS-DOS suffered the Black Screen of Death, and early builds of Windows Vista displayed the Red Screen of Death after a boot loader error

Hi, I don't know if this is going to be helpful, I have had trouble as well, my monitor kept flickering at the top, and bottom, it might suddenly turn to a black screen, with a white horizontal line across the screen, if I turned it off and on again, it would burst into action, I have bought my self a new flat screen 2 weeks ago, I'm very pleased with it.

I work repairing lcd monitors and it sounds like you have a fault with your driver tab. tabs are what connects the glass to the printed circuit board. it sounds like it is faulty to me. im sorry to say you cant fix it yourself. I would see if you can send it back to the manufacturer most are pretty good when it comes to this sort of thing. all the best to you

Check the cables are all secure. If they are, your worst fears could be realised and a fresh monitor will be required soon. Sorry!

Sounds more like the connection is loose, check both ends and see if that helps.
