The best gear for safety is not leather contrary to popular belief but certified with a designation of CE.

There are many helmets but the best are full face helmets that protect the jaw. BELL is a very good qaulity helmet. You can get a tinted visor for it also for the very sunny days and it clips on the helmet and you can then clip on the clear one for evening.

I would also get a jacket with CE armor go to ebay and search for motorcycle jacket ce armor (See link below)

Also pants withe CE armor. On freeways the big semis use retread tires and whenthey come off the peaces of steel can fly up as you ride by and cut ones leg, it happens all the time but they have pants that slip OVER the regular pants and even the knees have ce armor in them.

Many riders just get a helmet and gloves and thats it but as a rule of thumb you have to ask yourself this question.

"Am I dressed to where I can survive a spill going 80mph?

If the answer is no then you need more protection. I have listed the protective gear needed below with #1 being most important to safety and #2 second most etc..

    #1 Helmet

    #2 Jacket with CE armor

    #3 Pants with CE armor

    #4 Leather gloves not cloth

#5 Boots that are high tops. There are very good ones at BIg 5 sporting goods for $20-$50 on sale this week. I got a good pair for $29 and they have steel in them.

Now if I may suggest that you don't buy the helmet for him as one really needs to try it on...or buy it but ask for the return policy because the helmet should fit tight but not to where it aggravates.

As a rule the helmet should fit tight enough to move his scalp with the helmet if you rock the helmet while on his head. If you move the helmet and it just moves over his head without moving his scalp along with it, its too loose.

    Hope we helped.

Helmet - Must be DOT approved, SNELL approved is even better. Look for one with kevlar reinforced fiberglass construction, the best combination for abrasion and impact resistance. Full face helmets offer the most protection, but I don't like them because they detract a bit from the whole experience. I'd ride naked if it was legal and if seat leather wasn't so damn hot.

Clothing- If he likes leather, drum dyed leather is always softer, more supple and colored all the way through. It will show less wear and tear over the years than one thats just sprayed or surface dyed. I always get Hien Gerricke leathers, expensive, but last forever.

If he's not into leathers, cordura nylon or kevlar reinforced denim is a real nice option. Kevlar reinforced jeans are available, too. I just wear levi's.

Nice, uninsulated leather gloves, with nicely finished seams. Because we're always flickin' small switches and such, I find the better the fit and finish on my gloves, the easier everything is to operate.

A pair of comfortable boots with hard soles. Obvious reasons.

If you ride behind him, think about an intercom. <works best with full face helmets.

Some tender tushes like the gel filled seat coushions. They prevent that vibration induced numbness commonly known as 'monkey-butt'. I like monkey-butt and can tune my bike by how long it takes my behind to loose all feeling.

We have a no helmet law here. Everyone included. You can also put the kids in the back of a pickup and go down the road.Growing up where I did we had a helmet law. If you were off road, then you could go without a helmet, but on road, you needed a helmet. Have a great evening, thank you.

You want a DOT and SNELL approved helmet.

Choice of style for the rest of the gear is appropriate to the kind of riding he'll be doing.

Whether it be leather or fabric he should be wearing at a minimum boots over the ankle, a jacket with CE armor built into it, good gloves that provide protection in a fall. Somewhat optional but very highly recommended are riding pants with knee and hip protection.

I know it sounds like alot but being well suited for the road and knowing that you should be coming home the way you left is good piece of mind.

Must be D.O.T. approved for a helmet and that is state regulatedmandated depending on where you live and ride. Also it is a personal choice on what to wear depending on the laws. My husband hates helmets but laws make him wear it. Harley Davidson just cam out with a very lightweight helmet that feels like you are wearng nothing but meets D.O.T.

Jackets, gloves, pants, and boots can be whatever makes him comfortable. I can't wear riding gloves so I have leather work gloves. It is all what works for the rider. They are the one who has to be comfortable when riding.

The helmet must fit and be comfortable. It must be D.O.T. approved. It must have a D.O.T. sticker on the helmet. He needs a good motorcycle jacket and a good pair of motor cycle boots and gloves. This is the minimum equipment needed to ride. I suggest that you hit the Internet . Everything you need is there.

Also don't forget the eye protectors.

Get a DOT & SNELL approved helmet.

I highly recommend a Shoei or an Arai helmet. They are more expensive than the HJC or KBC line but the quality is really good.

Source(s): I had a crash wearing a Shoei. It held together very well.

Those are very personal choices and helmets and leathers are kind of hard to fit. Better to get a gift certificate or give an iou or something.

I bought a bike last year and found this site. it was a fantastic resource. do your own research because the helmet is one of your best friends in an accident.

    I recomend the Z1R ZRP-1 http://www.motorcyclistonline.com/gearbox/motorcyc...

because this equipment must properly fit, especially the helmet, i would suggest a gift certificate. if a helmet does not fit correctly it can be just as bad as no helmet at all.
