What's the most economical used car I can get in the UK for £2000-3000?

Right, I may soon be starting a job that's 14 miles across town, with the available public transport provision being frankly laughable (I could cycle it quicker, if the place wasn't surrounded by big-*** hills). My current car cost me £2250 and has lasted 3 years, and my sensible imaginary budget puts me spending about the same on a replacement.

However it needs to be far more economical. The current one is reasonably spacious and powerful enough (1.6 8v Astra), and fairly thrifty on the motorway, but across town it's a fuel hog, and swapping it for a more economical one will provide a genuine saving.

Brand-new cars are all well and good when it comes to being able to compare specifications and find something that fits the bill in terms of comparable size/speed (five decent seats and, say, 60hp/ton), but it's a bit trickier for used ones of the age/price I'm going to be looking at.

Any recommendations from people who know their stuff in this regard?

Cheers

MP

Update:

edit: Argh! Push-its! (As my last boss called them).

Less faecetiously, what's the reliability and interior room honestly like on those?

The 306 is probably the winner out of those being most modern and best combination of interior space but not being a huge lump (my mum once had a 205, it was a bit cramped, especially considering it WASNT the smallest in the range!).

Nice first suggestion, though, something to look at.

Guess I should have put a qualifier in the original question that i'll take a few MPG hit in order to get a car that's solidly reliable and has a decent amount (need not be "excessive") of space for driver + 4 passengers + a carry-on sized bag each + toolkit, and a small modicum of safety features... :-) Which are some of my current one's most redeeming points. Otherwise a 106 or AX diesel would be obvious first choices!

Update 2:

1.2 Punto? Interesting ... first car I ever drove at length (Mk1 version anyway), though it was a parental one. Nice sporty drive, reasonably spacious... never paid much attention to the mileage at 17 years old, but you may be onto something there. And it's petrol, which means my usual achilles heel (accidentally running out of fuel) isn't as crippling (diesels require work to get going afterwards).

Chronic problems with the ECU, clutch and gearbox on the one I used aside of course ^_^

hi . the peugot 205 diesels ive had could never be made to do less than 50mpg. i believe the 306 diesel is the favourite nowadays. 306 also cheap insurance(?) . be careful re insurance - an escort diesel was classed as a 'hot hatch' by my insurers once !

What about a Mk2 Punto? I had a 1.2 8v petrol one and my average town fuel consumption was between 40-45mpg. That's crossing Glasgow at rush hour, twice a day, no motorway or dual carriageways. On the few occasions I didn't just floor it up to 85mph on the motorway and took it easy, it would do well over 50mpg.

Don't believe what you hear about Fiats either, mine was as reliable as a Swiss watch over the 2 years I had it.

£2k will easily get you an 02 or 52 plate with under 50k miles.
