Battery Cables Touched Together?
What would happen if you touched the positive and negative battery cables together and held them for 10 seconds?? I received this advice about my van and want to make sure it wouldn't mess it up even more. Please don't be mean..this is a serious question.
Thanks! I am a woman but my common sense kinda told me it was just a prank. I am not going to do it!

I was having trouble with the display on my Honda Civic. The one solution was to disconnect the negative cable from the battery, then reconnect it in about two minutes. This lasted a while. The Honda service manager told me it s best to disconnect both cables, touch the ends together and that drains all remaining electricity out of the system; then reconnect the cables to the battery and the system (computer) should initialize, reboot and work just fine.

Provided they weren't connected to the battery at the time you touched them together I would say nothing would happen. If you managed to touch something across the two while the battery is connected first you will see sparks fly and whatever you laid across the terminals would get very hot or burn in two depending on how heavy it is and the expensive part is that you could possibly smoke a fusible link, fuse or even a module so DO NOT do this.

Nothing bad will happen. I assume he told you to DISCONNECT both cables from the battery then touch them together for a few seconds. Then replace them back onto the battery, red (+) first then black (-). This discharges any remaining electricity in the vehicle and resets the vehicle computer and would clear engine error codes in most circumstances.

if it was disconnected from the battery, nothing would happen...if you leave the battery hooked up and jump across them...i mean touch them together somehow for 10 seconds you would probably burn up every fuse and fusible link in it....that is...if the battery didnt blow up in your face...that is a very bad idea...i dont know who told you that but you should tell them their a fu#$%in idiot...do not try this...if your having problems just post a question and either me or someone else who knows their a$$ from a hole in the ground would be happy to give it a shot

the cables would get hot for one thing, it sounds like you may have a problem with the polarity on your vehicle, is it a pre computer van? if not i would be very leary. this is similar to how i was told to straighten it out, but not quite, i am not an expert but it doesn't sound good.

Nothing good would come of it. Actually, it would seriously hurt some of the electronics components in your van. Whoever gave you that advice is either misinformed or just wants you to ruin your electronic components in your van.
Have fun.

some completely ridiculous answers here! with the battery disconnected it will just drain all the ecus completely of power sometimes resetting them
