Save the file as a txt file with
File
Save As
at the top of the screen, note where the file will save
on the bottom left, give the new file a name
click the down arrow to seledt txt
When you open in Word, each line will end with a carriage return. You will have to remove them appropriately to format in paragraphs - and, any special formatting will be lost -- such as bold, italics, etc.

There is one thing you can try - go to www.media-convert.com -- a free, online converter. It might convert the file for you.

You can open a word pad file (.rtf = rich text format) into MS Word. But you can't do it other way (can't open the .doc file on the wordpad). Even though you can, you'll lose the settings (alignment, font style, color, spacing etc) and will be able to see only the text.

If you save it in .txt format, you'll definitely be able to open it.
