get a new mechanic!!!!!.......your steering wheel was shaking because that tire probably was underinflated or had a broken belt........most likely a broken belt......the lug nuts were on too tight because your mechanic is a "waterhead with an impact wrench".....he put them on too tight with an air gun.....I had this happen with a van I purchased and the dealer put the lugnuts on too tight with a impact...they then proceeded to tear up my rim trying to get the lug off.......you really need to change mechanics.....I suggest doing some research by asking your friends where they have their vehicles worked on and what kind of experiences they have had!!!!!.......

the tire being out of balance for a shaking steering wheel is a good idea...but.....when a wheel is out of balance the shaking will disappear and reappear at different speeds.......could be bent rim......but I doubt it......The reason I say it was a broken belt in the tire is because the tire let go on you, and it will cause your steering wheel to shake at all speeds.......

what is funny is that it actually proves that your rack is good because it is giving excellent feedback through the steering wheel which means the internal parts of the rack are in excellent shape!!!!..LOL funny how wrong your "mechanic" (and I use the term loosely) really was!!!!

Well first of all change your mechanic, lug nuts should not be that tight and should be torqued down properly as not to cause damage to the wheel bearings. The wheel you took off was probably not balanced properly thus causing the wheel shaking. When you get your tire replaced I would have them re-balance all 4 tires and wheels the right way and do a 4 wheel alignment as well. I would also double check that rim, just because it doesnt look bent doesn't mean it isn't.

A loose or broken rack would have cause a "loose" feeling in the steering wheel and you car would wonder all over the road, so this is out of the question.

Other problems could consist of bad wheel bearings, loose tie rods and/or ball joints...however these problems are more rare and I would do the basics first.

I say 1st off you need a new mechanic. If your cars steering wheel shakes. Its a front tire out of balance or a broken belt in the tire. When you have a broken belt you'll see a knot on the tire where the belt broke (befour it blew that is) sometimes it'll be on the back side where you cant see. Just get a new tire put on the wheel and get it balanced. Dont forget to tighten your lug nuts back up in a crose pattern to keep from warping your wheel.

to find bad tire or bad tire balance here what you can try put car in gear and let it roll off dont give any gas... if you feel any shake its a bad tire or wheel.... you will feel it in the seat of your pants its on the back if the steering wheel its on the front.... if it happens at speed like 40 to 45 then its balance... what you have told me sounds like you had a bad tire.... and no i dont think you need a new rack and yes i think you need not go to that place again and yes it would be wise to have the other tires check and you should keep a better look at them once a month walk a round your car or truck and check the tires air and look for wear it only take a couple minutes

Sounds like your old rim was bent. Was the tread on your tire worn at an angel every so often around the tire? If it was then it could have been the tire. Also sounds like you need to use a different mechanic, as the old one was screwing you!

If you rack was shot the car would wander all over the road, and most times they leak when they are gone. As for the lug nuts being to tight that is someone put them on to tight. they should be torqued to your cars specs.

There are many reasons for a steering wheel to shake, from tires to suspension parts. If it started suddenly, and you did NOT run over an obstruction or pot hole, then the sudden pulling to the right could be loose suspension parts, so have it checked immediately. Don't just tell em you want balance and alignment, but rather that this just started and you want a complete check of suspension and tires, then balance and alignment..

Sounds like the steel belt separated inside the tire you removed and explains why the shaking has stopped. You did not mention how old your tires are, but you may have a bad set to start with. I would buy a new set of tires first before i went to the expense of purchasing a new rack first.

    Hope this helps.

i f your steering wheel doesn't shake after you put on the sprare, then it has to be the tire or the wheel. you would have to put the wheel/tire assembly on a balancer to really see if the whell is bent or the tire is out of round, any tire shop should do this for free

this is an easy one. your tires needed to be balanced.

id get them balanced. i noticed that on my neon then i got them balanced and that was the problem.

no you wouldnt need to get a new rack, hes tryin to rip you off.

and you dont use a wrench for lug nuts there suppose to be snug, you wouldnt want those loose or your tire would fly off. you use a tire iron or breaker bar wich is about 2 feet.

You had a broken steel belt in the tire that blew out, that was what was causing the shake, there is nothing wrong with the rack on your car!
