How do Jehovah's Witnesses explain these verses from Matthew 24?

After asking Jesus about the time frame for the end of the world; Matthew 24:4-5 " And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you, for many shall come in my name, saying I am Christ; and shall deceive many"

Matthew 24:11 " And many false Prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many."

Mattthew 24:23-24 " Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not. For there shall arise false Christs, and false Prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect."

on the subject of when the end of days will come; Jesus replies, Matthew 24:36 "But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the Angels of the heaven, but my father only"

so could you please explain your interpretation of these verses which are in conflict with your teaching that Christ returned to us "Invisibly" in 1914? Also could you explain your reaction to the fasle prophecies of WTS from then?

Update:

IDENTIFYING THE "PROPHET" -- "So does Jehovah have a prophet to help them, to warn them of dangers and to declare things to come? These questions can be answered in the affirmative. Who is this prophet?...This "prophet" was not one man, but was a body of men and women. It was the small group of footstep followers of Jesus Christ, known at that time as International Bible Students. Today they are known as Jehovah's Christian Witnesses...Of course, it is easy to say that this group acts as a ‘prophet' of God. It is another thing to prove it." The Watchtower, 4/1/72, p. 197. (See Deut. 18:21)

Update 2:

1897 "Our Lord, the appointed King, is now present, since October 1874," Studies in the Scriptures, Vol. 4, page 621.

1899 "...the ‘battle of the great day of God Almighty' (Revelation 16:14), which will end in A.D. 1914 with the complete overthrow of earth's present rulership, is already commenced." The Time Is at Hand, page 101 (1908 edition).

1916 "The Bible chronology herein presented shows that the six great 1000 year days beginning with Adam are ended, and that the great 7th Day, the 1000 years of Christ's Reign, began in 1873." The Time Is at Hand, page ii, (forward).

1918 "Therefore we may confidently expect that 1925 will mark the return of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and the faithful prophets of old, particularly those named by the Apostle in Hebrews 11, to the condition of human perfection." Millions Now Living Will Never Die, page 89.

1922 "The date 1925 is even more distinctly indicated by the Scriptures than 1914." The Watchtower 9/1/22, page 262.

Update 3:

1923 "Our thought is, that 1925 is definitely settled by the Scriptures. As to Noah, the Christian now has much more upon which to base his faith than Noah had upon which to base his faith in a coming deluge." The Watchtower, page 106 4/1/23.

1925 "The year 1925 is here. With great expectation Christians have looked forward to this year. Many have confidently expected that all members of the body of Christ will be changed to heavenly glory during this year. This may be accomplished. It may not be. In his own due time God will accomplish his purposes concerning his people. Christians should not be so deeply concerned about what may transpire this year." The Watchtower, 1/1/25, page. 3.

1925 "It is to be expected that Satan will try to inject into the minds of the consecrated, the thought that 1925 should see an end to the work." The Watchtower, Sept, 1925 page 262.

Update 4:

1926 "Some anticipated that the work would end in 1925, but the Lord did not state so. The difficulty was that the friends inflated their imaginations beyond reason; and that when their imaginations burst asunder, they were inclined to throw away everything." The Watchtower, page 232.

1931 "There was a measure of disappointment on the part of Jehovah's faithful ones on earth concerning the years 1917, 1918, and 1925, which disappointment lasted for a time...and they also learned to quit fixing dates." Vindication, page 338.

1941 "Receiving the gift, the marching children clasped it to them, not a toy or plaything for idle pleasure, but the Lord's provided instrument for most effective work in the remaining months before Armageddon." The Watchtower, 9/15/41, page 288.

Update 5:

1968 "True, there have been those in times past who predicted an ‘end to the world', even announcing a specific date. Yet nothing happened. The ‘end' did not come. They were guilty of false prophesying. Why? What was missing?.. Missing from such people were God's truths and evidence that he was using and guiding them." Awake, 10/8/68.

1968 "Why are you looking forward to 1975?" The Watchtower, 8/15/68, page 494.

Update 6:

A JW might say that the organization is still learning. If that is so, then how can they trust what they are taught now by the Watchtower? Will what they are being taught now change also?

A true prophet of God won't err in prophesying. Only a false prophet does. The Jehovah's Witness organization, that claims to be a prophet of God, is really a false prophet. Jesus warned us by saying, "For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect

Mathew 24:24

Sorry Vot but these are quotes from your own Watchtower, these are the false prophecies your heirarchy have posted throughout its life. How do you explain them?

Update 7:

Vot; I understand your answer, but it was only a far back as 1975, that TWTS predicted the world would end, this is modern time history, people sold their homes in anticipation of the end of days, the leaders (President, Fred Franz,) encouraged this action, they believed it that much they encouraged people to sell their homes and use the money to spread the good word. I am sorry! but TWTS has always, until recently, Prophesied several times the end of the world, these false prophecies are against the very source of your faith, the bible.

Update 8:

How can a faith be true; if it can change its values and doctrine from the original, wouldn't that mean it loses credibility? How do you know, that what the TWB&TS teaches you now, won't change in the future?

Update 9:

NMB; these are quotes taken from the WT relating to the many prophecies that the leaders of the JW's had released through books and pamphlets through the years until 1975.

Update 10:

I am sad at the lack of JW's answers to this question

Many Greek scholars and Bible translators acknowledge that John 1:1 highlights, not the identity, but a quality of “the Word.” Says Bible translator William Barclay. Scholar Jason David BeDuhn adds: “In John 1:1, the Word is not the one-and-only God, but is a god, or divine being.” Or to put it in the words of Joseph Henry Thayer, a scholar who worked on the American Standard Version: “The Logos [or, Word] was divine, not the divine Being himself.” When Jesus is referred to as a god, It's a little "g". When Jehovah is referred to as God, it's a big "G".

I belong to no religion, my body belongs to the Christ for He MADE me, and my spirit was CREATED by God the Father, I obey the words of my Father, and I belong to the spiritual church made without hands.

The Christ, LORD God, (the Son of God) has walked the earth many times, (Abraham was glad to see me).

Jesus (the Son of man) has walked the earth only once, Matthew 24:11 has already happen it is told in Revelation 13.

Revelation 14 is speaking of Jesus the Christ, 42 generations after Abraham as told in Matthew 1:17, in which the false christ is bound for 1000 years.

Matthew 24:23-24 is speaking of this generation, the 10th king is about to take office and the 8th king will be the false Christ reincarnated,

The end is not yet, this is the end of the age, only. there are more than 930 years left, but there are just about 750 years left to repent and believe the "Good News"

    Great question!

I wonder why would God use WT as the only channel of communication between God and people knowing how many mistakes they made.

The Bible plainly warns against the preaching of another gospel ( NWT Gal. 1:8-9 ).

What we should ask from JWs " Did the apostle Paul teach the disciples in Galatia that Jesus Christ would return in 1914 and set up a visible organization with headquarters in Brooklyn, NY? If not, then the Watchtower leader's "good news" is " something beyond" what the Galatians accepted - placing then under God's curse for teaching another gospel.

I wish they would have so much understanding that they are not indeed God's only channel of communication between God and people. When teachers have made false predictions and changed doctrines, they are false techers.

Great question and research, You are right about the failed date of 1914 and others that followed, if it didn't happen then it failed. No prophet ever had to depend on updates to a prophecy except the JW's! The writings of the bible are clear until you come down to religions that want to add some strings attached and try to circumvent what they said with policies pertain to new light. If you look up new light it has no preference to prophecy. C. T Russell stated that he got his information from a spirit and it would come, they were dressed in their white robes on the side of a hill just to see it come and go with out the great battle, of course the spirit was wrong. I must say that the end is fluid.

/=(} For goodness freakin' sake!!!!! This is dang near impossible!!!

It's a stretch to call themselves "Prophets" or "Voices of God" since their text warn against those who proclaim themselves prophets.....

I hardly understand it myself, I was never really into it, even before I became Atheist!!!!!

    As I will always believe:

The World And Everything In It Is As You See It, And Nothing More

Do Not Seek Guidance, For No One Man-A Stranger On A Bus, A Friend, A Brother, Sister, Parent-NO ONE Can Tell You What You See

To Ask For Guidance Is To Give Up Your Sight In Favor Of Someone Else's, To Give Up Your Conscience, And Personal Beliefs For Those Of Another

    To Give Up.....

    Yourself.....

In answer to your "question" I'll point you to where this was asked, (more or less) just recently

    http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Atpa2...

None of this is "prophecy" so the answer to your question is "No!"

"ONe of the WTBTS biggest claims now to cover up is that it is not, nor has ever claimed that the JW organization is a prophet..."

The term "prophet " does NOT always mean a foreteller of events. Jehovah's Witnesses are 'prophet' in the following sense:

"4: an effective or leading spokesman for a cause, doctrine, or group"

Therefore under that definition, Jehovah's Witnesses are 'prophets.' There has been no claim of infallibility, no claim of divine revelation. Jehovah's Witnesses have never claimed to be inspired.

So then to answer your last question, yes I can honestly say that Jehovah's Witnesses are NOT false prophets.

    Edit to add:

"NMB; these are quotes taken from the WT relating to the many prophecies that the leaders of the JW's had released through books and pamphlets through the years until 1975."

While they may be quotes from publications of Jehovah's Witnesses, they are not "prophecy."

Jehovah's Witnesses are not prophets in the sense of foretelling future events and never have claimed to be such.

Man, I'm not a Jehovah's witness, but I am Christian. I'm sure none of them will answer this. Nothing against them. I believe in Jesus, not religion. People created religion. Not Him.

  • 1 decade ago

Why don't you ask the Holy spirit to answer it for you ?

then you will have the correct answer.

No man can give you an accurate interpetation but the Holy spirit from G_d can.

I'd like to know why Jw's dont believe in the trinity when the bible clearly states that God is 3 seperate persons. Also, why dont they believe that Jesus and Jehovah are the same being? Jesus said that He is God in the flesh, that the Father and Himself are One. The New World Translation has been serously altered to suport their teachings. Several verses have been doctored up to erase Jesus' deity, and erase the trinity.
