You should be able to play MOV - does it say it can't find the program or just croak. You should be able to download or let XP search for a good program. Quicktime and plugins for Windows Media Player are supposed to work.
There is a program called Switch that will convert video and auto formats.

You have not mentioned what is the error message when it does not play the file. If normal Win Media player plays the file, Adobe should also play the file. What is the location of the file? If it is in camera, the camera software also needs to be installed. Pleaase also check the any program is not stopping the video files from being played.

Since I don't know what model mumber you have I just checked NIKONSUSA.COM's website and what they says agree with what you say, NIKON records in QUICKTIME format. If you install software that plays QUICKTIME you will be fine.
The easiest to install if you are using a PC or a MAC is iTunes. iTunes is FREE and you don't have to give them an e-mail address, just unclick the box (update me) and ignore the e-mail address and you are fine.

Download the freeware 100% free - VLC that will solve your problem:
I had that problem with my Kodak MD835, but with VLC problem gone! You can also use VLC instead of Media Player.
