Read Nancy Campbell's book The German Shorthaired Pointer: An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet. It will give you an accurate idea of what life with a GSP is like. the author knws her stuff, is active in GSP rescue, and has a reputation as an awesome breeder.
They are not all "hyper," although they can be high energy. Choose a pup from good lines with stable parents and you'll have a awesome dog---like ME! LOL

What a great choice ! I've been 'owned' by them for 20yrs !!
The breed is a gundog, and a Hunt, point, retriever. They are as described, as having a short coat which comes in the colours of solid liver, liver & white, black & white or solid black. They are a classed as a large breed, are very energetic, love people/kids,and make great family pets. However, they do need lots of exercise and human companionship. My 3yr old male dog comes and sits on my knee for a cuddle every night, they really are a fantastic breed. I have shown my dogs for 20yrs and have just been to Crufts last week, they love the attention !!!

My g/f breeds GSP and shows hers in obed, breed and the field and they are ACTIVE dogs. The best home is one with a jogger who will take the dog with them, a hunter or outside hiker. They need to be socialized around other dogs so a Paw Park is often a great place to take them to burn off energy. They are often poor off leash dogs w/o lots of training. They tend to be protective and willful. In the right home a well bred one can be a great pet.

We have had two, and we have one right now.
One word: hyper. Ours is 13 and has not slowed down one bit. socialise as much as you can, whenever you can. Expose them to as much as possible.
