Any Police or CHP know the driving law here??????

I am going to court tomorrow. There is a two lane road that dead ends into a main road. There is a stop sign and both lanes must turn right. The street we are turning onto has three lanes. I was in the outside turn lane and turned into the farthest lane (3rd lane) I got a ticket for it. I can't find any law that clearly goes for or against this! I have looked at the California DMV handbook over and over and it just doesn't describe my situation. Wish it did. I think what I did was perfectly legal!

By the way I'm in California

Please help. Thanks.

It would be a lot easier to answer your question if you specified the Vehicle Code section you were cited for violating. I suspect that there were lane markings, because Vehicle Code section 22100 would appear to allow a right turn to be made into any available lane moving in your direction under the circumstances you describe UNLESS there are lane markings defining how the turn must be made.

(BTW, I am unaware of any statute in California which makes it illegal to change lanes in an intersection, so long as it is done safely.)

You have a decent case here, but it depends on how the lanes are marked. Generally, the far right lane must turn into the far right lane after the turn, and the next lane into the next lane, etc. IF the lanes are marked on the ground, then you have to stay in the lane or its considered "changing lanes in an intersection" which is against the law.

Basically, read the section you were cited for and see if it fits. If you feel it doesnt, then proceed accordingly.

im not CHP but i know that you are supposed to turn into the lane that corresponds with the lane you are already driving in...if a car was driving to the right of you (in the same situation) and you turned into the correct lane and he turn into the same lane and hit you he's at fault...(hope you followed that)...your best hope is that he doesn't show up.

I would have done the same thing. Your ticket has the vehicle code that you violated. I would look it up and get details to prepare for tomorrow. It may help with your defence if you can understand what vehicle code you violated.
