I need a good Portuguese-English pocket dictionary for European Portuguese. Can only find Brazilian.?
We are traveling to Portugal and I want to use a European Portuguese/English dictionary. Recommendations? I went to Barnes and Noble and they only had Brazilian Portuguese dictionaries. When I have looked on Amazon and other web sites, I can't always tell which dictionaries are Brazilian Portuguese. I ordered a couple, and they were neither one what I wanted. Help!
The Larousse Pocket Dictionary is for Brazilian Portuguese according to the back of the book jacket. This is one that I already bought -- doesn't say anything about Brazilian on the front of the book.
Sue - the back of the book says that it's Brazilian. I have had at least one Brazilian exchange student a year in my high school classes, and they have talked about the differences between Brazilian and "Portugal" Portuguese. I want to use the correct form if it is possible. We will be in the country for two weeks while my son is in the hospital in Lisbon.

Make sure you study European pronunciation before you go. If a Portuguese native hears that "gghheeee" sound, they will tell you to stop speaking Portuguese and switch to English. The difference is greater than American English and Scottish spoken with an almost unintelligible dialect. I worked with such a person and no one knew what he was talking about. He definitely didn’t speak “Sean Connery” Scottish. It makes me laugh that most Americans of Portuguese descent are descended from immigrants from the Acores, Madera, or Continental Portugal but 99% of all Portuguese language learning material is Brazilian. I even read one guy complain about a course because it was European. Also I've heard Brazilian instructors say things like "Why would you ever want to go to Portugal anyway". Duh! Perhaps because it is the land of my Grandparents! Sorry for ranting but we need more European instruction in the United States. A little more balance would be nice.

Try langenscheidt's, or Collins gem. both are set up about the same way, small, about 3.5 x 5 " (I guess) and the same as the LaRousse - Are you SURE it doesn't have both countries' language in it?
Collins tends to lean toward the European (being a British company) but always gives the Latin American, as well, it's just the second translations, not the first...in my Spanish Dict.
Langenscheidt is a German company, and I would expect them, too, to stress the European.
How do you know your Larousse is Brazilian language? What was your tip off? I don't know the differences in Portuguese, but I wonder what you found?

Well, Brazilian to Portuguese languages diferences are just like english from USA and UK. Everybody will understand you in Portugal (in Portugal we watch brazilian soap operas since 1977, and everybody knows the brasilian way to speak. In fact some "brazilian words" are the same that portuguese use hundreds of years ago)
We also have thousands of brazilain emigrants here.
PS - This week, the presidents of Brasil and Portugal signed a treaty, that unites portuguese language. From now on, there will be no differences in portuguese (spoken and wrotten) in all 5 continents!

There is no pratical difference that you will find in a dictionary, specially for travelling purposes. Electricity with a c before the t in Portugal but not in Brasil will not prevent you from being understood. Really.
