How would you legally do this?
Recently I found out that someone who lives in a different country to me, and who has been involved in a legal battle with a friend has gained information (personal) about me that was never disclosed to her. I would like to have this investigated because there is no way that she obtained this without permission or did it legally. I do not want to be part of her legal battle, it is not my business and feel she is dragging me in to get back at my friend. How do I get this investigate from the other-side of the world?
i live in a foreign country. so not that easy ( call the police) i was thinking contact the embassy of the country that she resides in
mantaray, its not that easy, the info she has is very personal and it has been obtained illegally.
richard where i come from its not legal and i will be persuing it. since it was illegally obtained, i have proof of this. the woman has stalked me for 2 years now. its sad actually that she needs to do this
it gors about principles. its illegal, the info se has, and her stalking. i have both the money and the time to prove a point. i have contacted her numerous times and she refuses to stop. her excuse is she likes to know things. i have her on record saying this

Kinda depends on what country(s) you're talking about.
In most Western countries most info about you is not protected by any sort of privacy laws.
In the USA, for example, pretty much nothing but medical records and bank account or credit card numbers are private. Addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, occupation etc are all public - there are agencies that make a living buying and selling that info.

Without knowing what information this person has, its hard to say what your options are.
How do you know your information was obtained illegally? Do you have proof of that? Is she using this information against you? Or has she stolen your identity?
Many times we forget when we post information about ourselves online that we forfeit our rights to privacy. If you put something out there in cyberspace that someone got ahold of, then it wasnt done illegally. (I learned that the hard way when my identity was stolen.) I was told I had no expectation of privacy when I put my info on the net. Whether its a social networking site, or a personal blog, if you put it out there, you have no recourse.
And as was said before, she is not governed by the rules of your country. She is governed by the rules of her country. You can check with the embassy where she lives and see if it would be worth it to pursue.

You note that it's illegal for her to have the information WHERE YOU LIVE.
Unless it's illegal for her to have it where SHE lives, you're out of luck.
Frankly, since she has limited ability to harm you at that distance, and the cost to pursue this matter would be prohibitive, I'd forget about it.
Making a big fuss about it just alerts her to the fact that this is a valuable weapon. If she's a control freak (sounds like it), that'll be all she needs to use it at every opportunity.

If somebody breached confidentiality (eg if your doctor told someone you medical history) then you could sue the person who breached confidentiality for compensation.
You can't get help from the police because it's not a crime.
(edit) If the person who breached confidentiality is a doctor, laywer priest etc then you can make a compaint and they may face consequences from their employer or relevant authority.
