Can you help me with Windows XP?

My sound icon is missing from my tray.

when I go to the control panel to I noticed that

the entire sound and devices folder missing

How do I retrieve it?

    If you have sound it looks as if the control panel applet for sound and devices has been corrupted; try accessing it from the run command

    to open the Sounds and Audio Device Properties dialog you click Start -> Run, type:

    mmsys.cpl

    and click OK.

    If the applet is merely "hidden" or disabled, you might be able to get it back by using a free powertoy called TweakUI XP

    install it then go to start>all programs>powertoys for win xp>tweakui

    click on "control panel" in the menu and place a tick next to

    mmsys.cpl if the entry is present; hit apply, ok
