White vinegar/water. You can add a little alcohol, (rubbing alcohol that is,) as an additive for drying better, but I just use vinegar and water mostly.

One time I asked one of the guys that clean business' windows what they use. He said they put a few drops of dishwashing liquid in their water. I've tried it, and it works, just don't use too much of the d. liquid.

I used warm water & vinegar & newspaper, just like my mom for a while. Now, I use Dollar General brand window cleaner & paper towel. It's a great cleaner for many other things too, because of the ammonia in it. I like it so much better than Windex. . It's good for removing certain stains too. I spray it on my countertops & on my doors for removing dirty smudges.

I use the same now as I used 50 years ago - warm water with a small amount of washing up liquid in it. Change the water as often as necessary (especially on outside windows which get filthy here as I have much traffic passing my house. Indoors is easier but I use water and white vinegar for final rinse. They sparkle when done.

I am 72 but although I use vinegar nowadays (which by the way I use for most of my cleaning), I cannot remember a time when Windowlene was not in use. It was a pink liquid and terrible stuff to use. I once spilt most of a bottle of it on the bedroom carpet. It proved impossible to get out.

I think it was the only product specifically for windows for many years. (In the UK)

By now I think you know it's vinegar and water, and polish them off with old newspaper. It's the amonia in the ink that is effective.

With a mirror, the most effective cleaner (smear free) is your own saliva. Just spit on the glass and polish off with soft toilet paper or a paper tissue. Sounds disgusting but it works!

We had doors between my mother's sewing room and the living room, the dining room and the kitchen that had little windows. It was my job every Saturday morning to wash them with vinegar/water mix and a newspaper. My brothers and sisters would have their hand prints all over them.
