how do i secure my internet connection?

hey guys recently i noticed that my bandwidth has been very low but it was very suspicious as ive subscribed the fastest internet connection of 100mbps. but recently i noticed that my bandwidth was "eaten up" by someone tapping into our network. i did some tracking down and realised that my good neighbours' son has been tapping into my network. therefore i can't go and tell her not to use directly as i don't want to spoil the good relationship we have as neighbours therefore how do i secure my internet connection. im using linksys and have tried to set passwords but attempts have been futile. any help guys? suggestions appreciated... thanks.

Update:

i have to say despite being in the IT sector, im not very good in networking and this might as well teach me some stuffs, thanks

Regardless of what router you own, there are a few steps that you can take to secure your network. First, find out what the strongest encryption method that your LEAST capable wireless device can use. In other words, if your computers can use WPA2, and one of your other devices can only use WPA, then you choose to either lock out the least capable device, or use WPA. In order of preference, the types of encryption you should use are WPA2 (AES), WPA (AES), and lastly WEP. WEP is extremely weak, and can be broken in a matter of minutes.

Also, turn of SSID broadcast, that way you need to know the name of your wireless network in order to connect it. Logic follows that you should turn off SSID broadcast, and then change the name of your network so that nobody has any idea what it is called.

Another layer of security that I would recommend is, some routers have the capability to filtre connections with MAC Addresses. If you can set up your router to only accept connections from the MAC Addresses of the wireless devices you own, it will make your network that much more secure. On a windows computer, you can find your mac address by launching the command prompt (windows key + r or start, run, type in "cmd", and hit enter). Then at the prompt type in "ipconfig /all".

Hope this helps, and best of luck.

You first need to determine what sort of model your Linksys modem is.

After doing that you will need to work out your login details (mine are on the bottom of the modem) but for your Linksys it may be different. Usually a google search should put you in the right direction.

If you already know how to access your modem's configuration panel, you need you navigate to the 'wireless' section. There will be an option to encrypt your wireless. This is either a WPA encryption will have a passkey of 10 or 26 keys. This will be in a format of XX XX XX XX XX - this is for the 10 key. 26 would be the same, only more.

You can also choose WPA if your modem supports it. This is considered stronger. You can also then use ubiquitous passwords.

You also very importantly need to make sure you are saving all your settings before doing a restart.

    Hope I helped ..
