Can you have strep throat without any throat pain?
I have VERY slight muscle aches, slight fatigue and a VERY slight headache (it was much worse yesterday) and noticed that I have three white patches on my tonsils. It's also quite contagious because a co-worker also has a headache and white patches on her tonsils. Neither of us has any throat pain whatsoever and other than the slight symptoms we mentioned, we feel great. Is it possible that this is strep?
Yes, I have a call in to my Dr., but while I'm waiting for a call back I'm wondering what wisdom the friendly Yahoo!Answers community might have. Any thoughts?
I've had strep a couple time before and both times it hurt like the dickens. This definitely does not feel like the strep I've had before.

You can even have a viral infection that can give you those white patches, the difference will be that with a Strep throat ( caused by bacteria) the symptoms are worse, only a throat culture can tell you if you have Strep, and if positive the treatment is antibiotics.

Yes.
I just got diagnosed with strep throat
and had not idea I had it.
My throat hurt but not a lot, but it was scratchy,
I was tired, and had slight muscle aches and light
congestion.
The doctor took one look and saw white spots on my
red throat and sure enough it was strep after the culture came back.
I would say get a throat culture.
The doctor I saw said some people get very light
symptoms.

Usually my throat doesn't hurt when I have strep too. Actually whenever I have it my throat doesn't hurt. And trust me, I'm sick all the time! So it's completely normal for your throat not to hurt when you have strep. Unless me and you are both odd..... and we both are going to die soon because our throats don't hurt when we have strep. But I doubt it and you'll get better soon I promise :) Strep usually lasts about 1-3 weeks. Yeah it's bad I know and the medicine is gross. But it's all worth it in the end. Just plug your nose and gulp it all down and then wash out the taste with Milk. That usually helps me not taste it anymore. It won't even leave an aftertaste!

I took my six year old to the doctor once of an earache, and found out he had strep. He hadn't complained once of a sore throat. So, yes, I'd say it's possible. I'd still get checked out, though, just to make sure. Hope you feel better soon! Get some chicken soup into you in the meantime. That stuff is good, no matter what you might have. :)

yes, you can have strep without a sore throat. If it truly is strep, then It requires antibiotic and doesn't go away on its own. My kids have had it several times without complaint of sore throat at all, just slight fever, headache and general malaise.

Get test for both mono and strep throat. both can happen at the same time. and I guess its possible to have no pain in the throat yet. It does not always hurt right away.

It is FALSE that you must have a sore throat when you have strept throat, and also FALSE that you need
antibiotics to heal it. Most healthy people can overcome strept throat without any antibiotics and many people have strept throat and do not even know they have it.
If you find you have strept throat frequently and do not always have symptoms associated with it, you should check with your doctor to see if you are a "Carrier". A carrier is a person who carries the disease and spreads it but does not get sick from it. Doctors state that if you have had NEGATIVE throat cultures(not rapid strept tests) then it is highly unlikely that you are a carrier.
But for the person who has symptoms such as stomach pain alone or perhaps no appetite or a headache, the answer is, YES, it could be strept throat. And usually when one has these symptoms the Rapid Strept is NEGATIVE but the CULTURE is shown to be positive. And although many people do heal on their own from the disease, the scary issue is that if you do not rid your body of the bacteria in a reasonable amount of time, it can migrate to your heart, kidneys and even your joints. Trust me, it is NOT easy to get rid of when it is in your joints. And if it has harmed your heart(scarlet Fever) or kidneys (GlomeruloNephritis:GN), the damage is permanent, with the exception of children who may recover from GlomeluroNephritis,
Otitis media (middle ear infection) can also be caused by streptococcus and if left untreated can cause scarring on the ear drums as frequent infections are attributed to "teething", colds and "referred pain".
Toxic shock syndrome(TSS which is similar the the infection that can occur from the use of tampons ans is a rare but serious complication which can multiple organs to fail(fatal).
Peritonsillar abscess/retropharyngeal abscess is another complication where the infection is trapped, swells and may encroach upon the structures in the back of the throat or invade and rupture into deeper anatomy and can be quite fatal.
One other complication, PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Strep) is associated with psychiatric symptoms such as Tourette's Syndrome (nervous tics) and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and which occurs in children.
There have been many studies on the effects of strept throat and population sampling to see what the
prevelence is. They should have an over the counter test, but they are concerned about documenting the
occurance. I think it could be easily remedied by having the test available in pharmacies where they could log the results; A Win-Win, if you ask me. Too many people, especially NOW, cannot afford a trip to the doctor to only be told it is a virus. With insurance co-pays and co-insurance costs so high, it is difficult to take in a family who has symptoms which may or may not be strept throat. That can be the difference of being able to feed your family or not.

Yes. Odd, I know, but my little girl had it last year and never had any real pain to speak of. The fever and white patches made me take her to the doctor, they did the culture because he thought it was strep, and it was. She never complained the whole time, ate normally and everything. It certainly was not like the strep throat I remember having!
