ABSOLUTELY does Customer service effect the economy!
Take a look at two Economic giants: WAL MART and SEARS ROEBUCK.
Mr. Sam Walton designed his first store as a marketplace for selling "general items" at a price to help *the general Joe* on the street afford them.
Mr. Sam's inclusive objective was to provide these goods with a Customer-service reputation like none other.
NOW, there are Wal Marts at almost every corner!
SEARS ROEBUCK also had this objective; but due to the marketplace in some locals, the customer service-aspect has dropped as has the retailer's bottom line.

Absolutely!
Starting at the end consumer experience, people are affected by good and bad customer service -- mainly bad. If you get crap service often from a place, you may decide one day not to return... and then tell your friends not to go there... and they tell two people, etc. All that money NOT going to that store or franchise does make a difference.
Now, let's say that store is a franchise, and it's all American, and its competitors get most of their stuff from China or somewhere. These competitors are the ones you and your friends are going to because of the bad customer service in the American store.
All that money is now going into the other stores, which spend it buying products from overseas. Y'alls money, which could be circulating and bolstering OUR economy, is now buying oxen carts, AK-47's, and paying the salary of socialist, "communist" government workers in mainland China. Basically, it's helping out THEIR economy.
This is but one example, and I know it's oversimplified and perhaps exaggerrated a bit. Exaggerated in the fact that all of it is in one store. Where it's not exaggerated is that this IS happening, but it's millions of people making these little decisions based on their customer service experience.
Those little decisions added up equal billions of dollars being shifted around. All because some teenager in his first job forgot to be polite, etc.
Hope this helps.

Good customer service brings customers back. Bad customer service drives customers away. It is difficult to get the customer in the store in the first place. Keeping a customer is essential to business success. Employees that keep customers coming back can get by with many other faults.

I would say so in a way. Customer service affects your business. Good customer service, customers return, spend money, company grows and pays more taxes. Bad customer service, customers complain and wont return to spend money, company suffers and goes out of business and economy losses a tax paying business.

Being pleasant comes naturally to some. However, for those who have grouchy or rebellious attitudes, well, their job is a good place to start even if the employer has to demand it. When good mannerism belongs to customer service so does the money belong to the customer who decides where the best place is to place or spend his/her money ; )
Besides, the worse that could happen is they bring the attitude home with them and a happy home usually spends more on needs and wants. My opinion is yes, it does have a bit to do with the economy.

I think so. There are places I don't go anymore because of the poor service. And as we slip into recession and our money is tighter, when I want to go eat or shop I will save my money for the places that offer the best service.
