What's the difference between Geraldine's "lucky to be black" and Obama's "typical white person" comment?
Geraldine Ferraro
"If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position. And if he was a woman (of any color), he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept."
Barack Obama
"... .. The point I was making was not that my grandmother harbors any racial animosity. She doesn't. But she is a typical white person who, if she sees somebody on the street that she doesn't know there's a reaction that's been been bred into our experiences that don't go away and that sometimes come out in the wrong way and that's just the nature of race in our society. We have to break through it..."
Geraldine's comment acknowledges, the historical racism of America, and that a lucrative black candidate is a new concept.
Barack Obama's comment reiterates the historic racism of America, through an example of his white grandmother.
Where is the offense? Are they both correct in their assessments?

Ferraro was using race as a tool to dismiss Obama's popularity. She was using it against him. It was an underhanded and subliminal way of saying that Obama has used his race to his benefit. The only thing is, I've never heard Obama claim that...only Hillary. Makes one think.
If you read Obama's comments IN CONTEXT (which most choose not to do), he was describing a state of being. His use of the phrase "typical white person" is a generalization. I mean, c'mon! How many white folks would be completely at ease strolling the streets of Compton after dark? White people feel nervous...it's a fact. He didn't use that term as a derogatory comment on the "white condition" the way that Ferraro used Obama's race to dismiss his accomplishments.
Ferraro was specific in her attack. Obama used a generalization to describe an overall condition. It's all in the CONTEXT people! You can't just pick and choose a singular phrase or two.

The difference is massive because Ferraro wasn't saying the statement like it was a good thing, more like she was annoyed with the fact that Obama has come at this time.
Obama was trying to educate the masses about America's past but at an individual level and basing things on individual experiences of people and how that shapes their views on who they are and why they are that way.

I think his comment was extremely racist and less sensitive comment "typical white person" which he will be held accountable for by Americans. His entire campaign was based on "hope and change" which was preaching how we should unite and it is not about race or gender?? Now we know he has been linked 20 years to a radical racist who hates America and white people and making the news which at first he lied and said he was not present to only have to admit to being present. Then he throws his grandma under the bus with his lame excuse in his speech to now his new idiotic comment on "typical white person". Then you have his dealings with Rezko and yes Black Panthers where there was a link on his site to their site. What else does America need to know about him before they realize he is not someone you need or should want in office. I would never throw my grandmother under the bus as I love her dearly. Obviously he loved the 8,000 voters in his church and hate mongrel"Wright more then Grandma eh? He has no shame in my opinion.....has he forgotten who raised him as he stated in his eloquent speech everyone is all in love with? Personally I wanted him to tell America why he hung up with the creep aka his pastor and spiritual leader?? Could you only imagine had Hillary or McCain made the "typical blank person" in a speech? They would tear them down and you would see affirmative action speaking up....why is this acceptable and also why are they giving him an out to explain. No need to...we heard him LOUD AND CLEAR. Wonder what he will think when he lost all those "typical white people" he speaks of and their votes.....he sealed his own fate now.

Geraldine Ferraro states the fact that Obama got 90% of the black vote because of his skin color. It is targeting at him.
Barack Obama is saying "typical" white people. His comment is about all white people.

I don't see a problem with either statement. I just find it odd that white ppl find fault with anyone acknowledging their race has issues no different than anyother race when it comes to preconcieved ideas about other ppl

Seems to be similar
Lucky to be something implies lucky in this day and age he gets or had acceptance so that is in a way luck or timing.
Typical White Person implies all Whites are Racist.
You do the analysis.

Ferraro is white - so she's a racist
Obama is black - so it's OK
It's called double standards. It's the way of life nowadays.
