My neighbor is making my life hell! What can I do?
I own a rental house that has 8 bedrooms and 3 baths. I permited an additional 2 bedrooms and an additional 2 baths. I rented all the 8 original rooms out and now have begun the permited and approved additions. My neighbor is pounding on the desk at city hall and demanding investigations. They initially told her to stow it but now her persistance is getting attention. They issued the permits....can they take them back after signing them off. Can I sue her for harrassment? What do you suggest? Oh, by the way, forget about the 'bake a cake, send flowers and be friends' routine. She won't be rational and pretends that everything is fine while carrying on like a maniac to the city. She thinks she runs the block. Thanks for any help.
To bud68 ...I totally would think there was more to this than I have relayed, too. Sadly, it is the entire story. I don't even live there and only hear about these things from my Contractor and workers. When I have seen her (only 3 times total), she seems a little pushy and opinionated( she hated the color we painted the house, she hated the color we painted the living room, she hated the new tile...and invited herself in to tell us) but other than that nothing memorable has occured. I, too, am suspicious when I read some of these stories but in this situation...that is what is so disturbing! I could understand if I lived there and had barking dogs or bad tenants. All my tenants are geeky foriegn exchange students who go to school all day and work all night. When asked, they were totally unfamiliar with any of the neighbors having not met them yet. I hate the valley...

Once you recieve a permit you are legally allowed to build whatever you want onto your property. Sounds to me like she has nothing better to do then harass people. Weve all had those kind of neighbors at some point or another. I would contact a lawyer asap, dont let anyone infringe on your rights!

Have a talk with your landlord about this harassment. Most places have noise ordinances, but they generally don't take effect until after a "reasonable" time of day, like 10 pm. Shutting the door in their face is probably the best idea. They don't sound like anyone I would want to befriend. You may want to record (or even video) your own conversations (and especially do record her using abusive language at you) and your normal living patterns and compare those activities to the times they complain, so that you have some hard proof of harassment. Keep detailed notes as time goes by, they qualify as legal documentation. They sound a bit like bullies, or else so exasperated until they have lost their minds due to previous college student neighbors from the past, lol. Or...you could move as soon as your lease is up. Sounds like more stress than it is worth.

I am so sorry you have a neighbor like that! I don't think they can take the permits back after signing them off, but they CAN come around and snoop and find out if every little square inch of your house is in keeping with every little building code requirement.
It is very good to know who your neighbors are and anticipate any problems before they arise, so that you can do your best to circumvent the problems they might cause.
Make sure you get tenants that are nice to this neighbor and respect her. She isn't someone you want to piss off.

I had one like that.
If you ignore her, it will drive her up the wall ( She NEEDS to feel that she runs the block - ignoring her shows her she doesn't)
Smile every time you see her - that will drive her blood pressure up another 20 points - if you're lucky, maybe she'll have a stroke.
The city can't take the permits back without incurring legal liability from you, so they likely won't. But make absolutely sure that you follow those permits to the letter.

Start complaining to the city about her. tell them her dog dumps in your yard and she dresses inapropriatly when outside. And dont forget to mention the strange men she has comming and going all night.

Get a lounge chair and set it up in her view then buy a speedo and pull it up your buttcrack and sunbathe often. Pretend to pick boogers study then eat them. clean your toenails.
I think you are safe as long as you have the permits.

Inform her that if you can't add on, that you are going to begin organic composting with the manure pile on her fence line!
