Religion a necessary evil?
Without the smugg nutters who like a good mystery story ,do you not feel that religion wraps itself in so many enigmas and unanswerables that it is evil in essence.
Is it just a necessary evil that humanity accepts.
If any religion is "right" why are there still so many of them.?
If your God is the true God then why can you not prove that to all and we can all go live in paradise. ?
Sorry to use the word evil, what i mean is that it is a contradictory and paradoxical byway that each and every religion has in its dogma.
It seeks to "guide" to truths and morals, yet causes more conflicts that undermine those very morals.
Robin D and Susan A are answering some of these fundamentals without too much bias.
Surely faith alone in untangibles/intangibles is akin to occultism. And so by association "evil".
Joe citizens youtube link is worth a visit, thanks.Dawkins views are not dissimilar to mine.
Mr Trench has it succinctly.
Well all four of these people mentioned above seem to have grasped my bone of contention.
I would like to vote each of them the best answer, yet i await one more answer. I am going to go star one each of their questions to give them five points each. Then i will leave this to either a vote or find a fifth elemental to vote as best answer.

I think that it's well past time for humanity to evolve past the stage where it needs fairy tales for comfort and justification. Why is it considered by many to be a virtue to have "faith" ie, to not think and to believe with no evidence whatsoever? Religion may have been an inevitable part of our journey as humans, as myth has played a role in filling the gaps of knowledge, but as we evolve and learn about our universe we should rely on religion less and less. It's time for us to stop swaddling our brains in intellectual anesthesia.

Everyone is different and no one thinks the same way as every one has there own brainwaves or thoughts. Unless they are a part of a cult or high on drugs. Therefore there will always be many enigmas and unanswerable. Not evil just inexplicable.
No human accepts it. Many fight against it. No religion is right.
What or who is God. Has he it been proved?
What is paradise?
One mans meat is an others poison. No two people truly enjoy the same things 24/7.
Why do we need to prove there is a God. If someone needs to believe. Let them. As long as they don't force it upon others. Live and let live.
Charity and good will should come from the heart. Not because an unkown un proven idol tells us to do it. I'm not an athiest. I just believe in to treat others how you'd like to be treated yourself. Talk to others. You never know when they last had a warm conversation, that's for young and old.
Paradise should come from the heart we can live in paradise if you stop wanting more than what you've materially got.
You can't always get what you want. You can love and be loved.
No one needs to prove anything. That's how resentment and hate brings on frustration and unnecessary fighting.
Believe if you need to. Listen and share. Don't take life and love for granted. Care for others.

It is clearly a thing necessary to some, otherwise it would not have been invented and still be so prevalent.
I can understand it having been necessary many years ago. Mankind looked at the stars and the sun and did not understand. They needed an explanation. It was part of our evolution.
But it is not necessary today. Religion is an anachronism, that causes far more bad than good. I do not need to believe in the supernatural to believe that it is right to respect others and be nice. Sadly, religious nutters use it as a reason to disrepect people and be horrid. It has to go!

There are many religions and gods.
There is but one true God.
And the one true religion that follows him demonstrates this by their works.
1] Teachings are based not on what man says but on God's Word the bible.
2 Timothy 3:16
All Scripture is inspired of God and beneficial for teaching, for reproving, for setting things straight, for disciplining in righteousness
2] They make the name of God known. Let's face it, how are you going to develop a relationship with someone without knowing His true name.
Psalm 83:18
That men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth.
{Authorised Version}
3] Demonstrate faith in Jesus Christ. He sacrificed his life on behalf of mankind and rules today as King in Heaven.
John 3:16
For God loved the world so much that he gave his only-begotten Son, in order that everyone exercising faith in him might not be destroyed but have everlasting life.
4] Members of the congregation demontrate true love for one another. Reaching across racial, social and national boundaries uniting the brotherhood not dividing with war and contentions
John 13:35
By this all will know that YOU are my disciples, if YOU have love among yourselves.
5] True religion remains seperate from political and world affairs.
John 15:18, 19
18Â If the world hates YOU, YOU know that it has hated me before it hated YOU. 19Â If YOU were part of the world, the world would be fond of what is its own. Now because YOU are no part of the world, but I have chosen YOU out of the world, on this account the world hates YOU.
6] True religion is not a ritual, tradition or habit. It is a WAY OF LIFE.
Endeavoring to reflect God's Spirit in their daily lives.
Galatians 5:22, 23
On the other hand, the fruitage of the spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faith, 23Â mildness, self-control. Against such things there is no law.
7] Members, actively fulfill Jesus command to preach the good news and make disciples and full the prophecy at Matthew 24:14 to preach to all the inhabited earth before the end comes.
Matthew 28:19-20
Go therefore and make disciples of people of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the holy spirit, 20Â teaching them to observe all the things I have commanded YOU. And, look! I am with YOU all the days until the conclusion of the system of things.”

Every society, no matter were you go, man searches for a god. Whether it's to fill the void inside them, or simply for answers. It seems to me man was built to need a god. I believe in God (The Father, Son, Holy...). Yet I can't answer every question you ask me to prove to you my God is the one and only one. I can tell you if my God wanted things to be that way he would have been more forward about Himself. Instead it seems he wants people to have faith and trust Him. Why He made it that way I don't know. He loves the humble, and wants us to trust Him rather than on our own understanding. (Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding). He came to earth once. He's not going to force anyone to believe Him.

Our job is not to prove God. The current condition of "religion" has been brought about by our own smug attempts to tailor it to our needs. There is one true God, for He is not divided, and as we get closer to the return of Jesus, which will usher in the reign of God here on earth, we are called upon to study His word, and discern the spirits. Once again, it is not about religion, but rather relationship, and you would do well to pursue that avenue of study. It can become very confusing with all the denominations and we are easily misled, but again, "study His word to show yourself approved". There are always choices, we just need to made the proper one. Be well, and be blessed.

Not necessary nor evil. Religion by itself can't cause too much harm. It's just when people believe it that the problem begins. It's archaic hokey nonsense that the world would be better off without, for sure.

I agree, religion is not uniting us but it is dividing us and putting everyone in to categories because there are so many religions. No one will ever know the true answers.

Most of the religion's are simple and for the better of humanity. It is people who manipulate religion for their gain. Don't blame religion for our shortcomings.
Trust me it is easy to accept than ask twisted questions and confuse yourself! As they say magic is neither good or bad but it is the heart of magician that is good or bad!
God, yes there is One true God and everything in nature is proof that God exist,
1) human body is a perfect and magnificent instrument that he created, no evolution can get this perfection.
2) the season cycle
3) the interdependence of life and food resources
4)the intelligence with which we are gifted
5) the balance of our environment
6) ozone
i can go on but i guess you get the general idea.
speculation and arguments never get answers or resolve anything :-)
