Possibly a Virus/Spyware or just IE bug?

I am running Avant Browser which I understand is powered by IE. Sometimes a blank tab will suddenly open and then disappear quickly, and my Windows Taskbar then disappears. Most of the time, (I'd say 95%) it comes back in about 15 seconds but occasionally it doesn't come back at all, and so I use Ctrl-Alt-Delete to open Task Manager and Restart my computer.

When the taskbar disappears:

- I still have my mouse cursor and can view and interact with open windows.

- Pressing the Windows button doesn't bring up the Windows Start Menu.

I have run all the virus scans/spyware I can think of: CW Shredder, Rogue Remover, Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, AVG AntiSpyware, AVG AntiVirus (in that order, to eliminate any potential threats). Latest versions of all. I am "apparently" virus and spyware free.

System info

Browser: Avant 11.5 Build 21 (latest version)

OS: Windows XP (Version 5.1, Build 2600.xpsp2.gdr.070227-2254: Service Pack 2)

All of the antispyware program that you used are very poor. Rouge Remover is spyware period. The new Adware 2007 is very poor compared to the prior version. I am a registered beta tester. AVG, is very poor at find spyware, SpyBot is not all that good, because it only find tracking cookies and has "immunization", that conflicts with all of your other antispyware and your one antivirus software.

Try, the free version of Superantispyware. http://www.superantispyware.com/ Will find viruses and spyware without any conflict to your own antiviurs. I use myself. Download and update run an in depth scan. Recommned that you reboot after virus, viruses or spyware is found to be on the safe side.

I doubt that Superantispyware will fail you. Just in case, then I would recommend that you go to your tray, start, accessories, system tools, system restore and look for the last good date you can perform a system restore before you observed this problem

Best of luck to you. Pls. excuse my English not my primary language.

Don't listen to the Firefox garbage. Firefox is garbage. I'm going to take you some steps that should clear this problem. First: Go to Tools> Internet Options>Privacy Tab>Check the Slider and make sure it is on medium. If not click the Default button. Click Apply. Now go to the Advancee Tab>Click Restore Default button. Click Apply Now go to the General Tab>Click the Delete Cookies>Delete Files (in the window that come up check the box for Delete Offline Content)> go below to Clear History and click it. Now go back up to the Sites button and click. See the little window with the number and up/down arrows? Change that number down to 50. Click OK and OK again. Now clear Windows Temp Files: close all programs except your Anti-Virus and Anti-Spy programs. For the ones in the System Tray (by clock) right click on each and click Exit. Close your Browser. Now, Goto Start>Run>type "%temp%" (no quotes). In this window go to the menu bar Edit>Select All> in the list that expanded click on the Delete the selected Items. If a window appears saying a file can't be deleted it is because a program is running using that temp file. Check again and exit all programs and click delete again. Now the last step if you have DSL: Turn off the Power Button or unplug if no button. Turn off your computer normally and then then the monitor. Wait a couple of minutes and the restart everything in reverse order. This final step clear modem clutter and RAM clutter. You should Clear the Browser cache (Steps under General tab) once a day. You should also Clear the Modem and RAM clutter once a day. This should get your pictures back.

That sounds like Windows Explorer (the part that runs your desktop) is dying. Instead of restarting your computer, I think you can just restart Windows Explorer. Try this:

    1. Bring up Task Manager.

    2. Look in the processes list for explorer.exe.

    3. If it's not there, click the File->New Task menu item.

    4. Enter explorer.exe in the text box.

    5. Click OK.

    Hope that helps.
