Anyone else think the Olympics should not be held in China?

China has one of the worst human rights records of any country. They violate the spirit of the Olympic games. Why would the IOC award the games to China? Anyone else think China should not have been allowed to host the games?

    The olympics is an international, worldwide event. If we allow them to compete, how can we deny them the ability to host?

    Worst Human Rights Record? Hilarious. It's all propaganda from the Western idiots who believes that Democracy should spread to China. Why would China punish citizens that don't want Democracy/separatism/threaten to boycott the Olympics? Those e few who shares these views will be punish harshly for it for breaking the law.

    IOC has nothing to do with picking the host. Countries do.

    You are just jealous that China deserved it not just bribe like the Americans and possibly England that cheated France

    Chinese ambition is all very well but it is Chinese dishonesty which bothers most people. China is making a giant plastic copy of the western world by ignoring patient rights while pretending to "crack down " on forgers.

    I have seen several attempts by Chinese people to change history with forged documents , for example there is even a claim that "China discovered America" using a map which has been shown to be a forgery. It showed inland references which could not have been known by anyone. Clever forgery, even the paper was old but the ink was modern.

    There are many Chinese web pages with forged "evidence" that almost all western inventions were originally Chinese.

    Source(s):

    "Geoff Wade, senior research fellow at the University of Singapore's Asia Research Institute, echoed her sentiment.

    "The map is an 18th-century copy of a European map, as evidenced by the two hemispheres depicted, the continents shown and the non-maritime detailed [sic] depicted," he wrote recently to a group of maritime scholars"

    To answer the question, no, the Olympics should not be held in China mainly due to air contamination which makes a mockery of the Olympic idea

    I disagree. That is a knee-jerk, simplistic reaction. The best way to get change in China is to give them opportunities to be included on the path to a full-fledged membership in the international social-political world, so they have something to lose by not further improving their human rights record. Once they are chopped off by not allowing them to have the games or being part of other international events they have nothing to lose by continuing the way they have in the past on human rights. The only incentive they would have is to improve internally to raise their status and contacts and allies and rewards externally. Don't know if you're old enough to remember when China was completely closed at the borders and Mao was in charge. Their human rights record was far worse then, so I would say their desire to be part of the international community has encourged them to improve their record. The international community's appropriate response then would be to allow them to do something like host the Olympics. It's another in a series of steps in the right direction, I think.

    The IOC knew about China's human rights record BEFORE they awarded the Olympics to them. I think now, it's too late! The Olympics should be held in China. Nothing is going to change by boycotting the Olympics. We boycotted Moscow in 1980, and then 'they' boycotted LA in 1984. Solved nothing.

    Either the politicians must say soon that they will boycott the Olympics or it will be necessary to call for the world's athletes to do so and call for all Olympic sponsors products to be boycotted like coca cola!!!!

    We want and need the Olympics to go ahead for sport but it is now in the hands of the politicians - if they do not act - then the world must and if that means sacrificing the event then so be it!!!

    FYI, China is no longer on U.S. State department's "worst" human rights records.
