Cingular Blackberry without purchasing internet?

Is it possible to use a blackberry on the Cingluar (or any) network without buying a data package?

What I really mean is can I get a blackberry from them (like a Curve or something close) and not buy a data package?

Or are directly purchased smart-phones only able to be used with an internet package?

Just to use it for the contacts, texting, calendar, etc.

Anyone know?

Thanks!

I'm sorry, but the previous answer is completely incorrect. A blackberry curve from at&t for example is $200 in the store with a $100 mail in rebate. When you choose not to get the blackberry connect data plan the only thing that you have to sacrifice is that rebate- So the phone will be $200 straight up. You will be able to use the phone for phone calls, text messaging (minus picture messaging) and calendar etc. There is a bit of a cool loop hole, though. If you add the blackberry connect package when you get the phone, you will be able to get the $100 rebate. Typically, it will take you about 6 weeks to get the rebate, and once you have received it, go ahead and cancel the data package. You will probably end up paying $40 or $50 in the end and you will get your rebate back, and will have had the chance to try out the internet incase you think you might like to use it in the future. The phone's functions will not be inhibited if you do not choose to get the data plan, you will just pay a little more and you will not have the option of web browsing, e-mails, or picture messaging. Hope this was helpful!

Technically if you were to purchase the blackberry curve 8310 you would be able to send mms without a data package because that is the only blackberry with built-in mms service books. But if you master reset your phone ever you will lose them and they will not come back until you sign up for a data package

No i know that ATT (formerly Cingular) will not let you use a Blackberry without the data plan...i recently purchased a used Blackberry and the phone its self will not process anything or work for you without the data package...the cheapest one that they have is 30.00 a month but if you are just going to get it for texting and calls..it is really and expensive phone for just that..for you it would probably be best to get something simpler...and you can avoid the data package problem as well.

I believe AT&T Wireless (formerly Cingular) allows you to use a BlackBerry without having to purchase a data plan. You will be able to text and make calls just fine. You won't, however, be able to send MMS messages (picture messages). You would need a MediaNet or BlackBerry data plan for that.
