Fly problem with Horses?
We currently use Tritech14 on all four of our horses, keep the pasture and the barn clean of poo,and have the fly bags hanging everywhere, but I heard somewhere that vinegar works too? If so, how would I use it?

I have heard nothing but good about using avons skin so soft (bath oil) solution on horses. I just recieved some and going to try it today. Here is a recipe & if you do a Google search you will find many more. The best thing is that it is chemial free.
Fly Repellent
2 cups white vinegar
1 cup Avon Skin So Soft (Bath oil)
1 cup water
1 tablespoon eucalyptus oil
Reminder - Consult your vet and use at your own risk.
If anyone else has tried it, please comment good or bad

Tritech used to be a good product! Its been around for years! Hmmmm.... I also keep a clean barn, keep manure as far as possible away from the barn. Personally, I switch between Endure and Happy Horse, and no big fly problm what so ever. But a nighbor buys the cheapist stuff on the market, or sometimes makes his own spray, and you cant stand around His barn for more the a few minutes! He also told me expensive sprays dont work, but I wonder why he has such a fly problm and I dont? No spray is100% effective, and none last for more then 24 hours, especially during rainy wether.
Home made stuff, I agree, use it at your own risk! If it worked that good, I would bottle it, sell it, and make a ton of money!

We feed all of our horses a garlic supplement in the morning to help stop flies from biting. We also use Fly Predators. They really help keep the fly population down. At another farm I worked at, their horses were out almost all of the time and they put Fly blocks in their pastures that the horses would eat. They are expensive and don't last very long, but holy cow they work really well. The horses eat them and then when they put out manure it leaves something in the poo so that when flys lay eggs in it, it kills the eggs or larvae and prevents them from maturing into adult flies.

Avon, Skin so Soft bath oil is good but you need the Woodland Grove scented version. You don't need to mix it with anything else and can dilute it with water or even bath them in it. Also it cleared a friend's pony of Sweetitch.
Otherwise try a mix of strong, cold, tea( about a pint) with a tablespoon of washing up liquid and a teaspoon of either euclyptus, lavendar, citronella and/or teatree oil, made up to a litre with water. If flys are bad add a half cup of vinegar

My vets recommend not to feed is to the horses, can cause stomach problems. I also use tri-tech 14, but last yr I tried the Simplifly, feed through, and WOW I was shocked and amazed I still had some, but I would say it was cut down by 80%. It was worth it to me to spend the 22 bucks for the season for her. I'm hopeing they didn't go and change it and it works as good for me this season.

Yes it does work! Just put some on a soft rag and wipe it on the horses legs, Ears, and Face. Be careful not to get it in their eyes though. You can use it anyway there are flies!

Banks is right, but if your horse has skin issues (dry or infected skin) or your worried about drying his skin out some people dilute the vinegar and use it as a spray.

Yes vinegar works. You can put it in a spray bottle and spray it on (don't spray it on their face) and you can put vinegar on a rag and put it in their ears on their legs and face etc.
