Is it legal to drive in a public school parking lot when it is out of session?
Here's the thing: I live in Virginia, U.S. I just got my learner's permit and I am learning how to drive. I am still in the parking lot stage.
So i just had a question that if it is legal to drive in a public school parking lot when it is not in session?
Because we have just had our spring break, and there's an elementary school near my house, which has a really nice parking lot, where i can practice driving. I was just wondering if it was legal. Because i know, you can not do that on a private property because it is considered trespassing.
So is driving in the empty school parking lot going to be considered trespassing?
Thank you for taking the time to help. :) I appreciate it.

You will be fine as long as you are not burning rubber or in any way damaging anything. Keep in mind that to get from your house to the school you will need to drive on the road and that may require a licensed driver to be with you depending on the laws where you live.
One other note just because something is owned by a government agency does not make it public giving anyone the right to come and go as they please but in your case there should be no problems :)

You probably won't have a problem as long as you are not destroying any property. As far as being "public", so are parks but they are off-limits after dark, even to the public. Our schools lock access to their playgrounds when school is out or closed for holidays.

As long as there isn't a no trespassing sign, and no one complains, then you shouldn't have a problem. You may want to check with the Board of Education first.

look for the signage...i havent written a ticket yet for it...but in los angeles there is a muni code restricting practice driving in some parking lots ( parks, open parking lots, city owned property). i personally would not cite for that unless it endangers public safety.
look for signs posted.

Yes it is legal. And any cop that does anything to stop you should have their badge revoked.
That land is land YOU (or rather) your parents pay for through taxes. If you want to use the parking lot to practice driving feel free to do so.

Everybody's taxes pay for public property, so the answer is yes. Is someone driving you over there? It would be iligal for you to drive yourself. Good luck!
