How do you stop a puppy...?

from eating his own poop. I have to be right there when he finishes so I can stop him from eating it. He still sometimes manages to grab some and run and eat it. He is a 3 month old chinese crested powder puff.

Update:

My puppy has been dewormed and all his shots of up to date. I feed him puppy chow and he gets puppy vitamins. He is very healthy and happy.

This is actually VERY common. There are several causes. One is lack of proper diet. Two is punishment... if you ever made them sniff thier poop after pooping in the house, this is a side effect. Three (this is gross) is they just want a second round of dinner. The way to solve it is buy a powder that you sprinke on their food. They won't like the smell (or taste) of their poop, and therefore won't be tempted to eat it. Pineapple juice works the same way. I've heard garlic works as well, but I've also heard that garlic is bad for dogs, so I don't suggest it. Do not put pumpkin in the food... that will just make him poop loose stools. It is used for constipated dogs.

This works but you must be diligent.

Keep a leash on your puppy - the longer, the better. A six foot leash is the bare minimum - a 10 to fifteen foot one is better. You must always be ready to grab the leash in an instant if your puppuy begins to approach poop. Allow the dog to drag the leash and be ready to snatch the leash to pull the dog away from the poop. If the dog goes near the poop, say in a firm low voice, "Leave It!" -while pulling back on the leash to put distance between the dog and the poop. Let the leash go slack again and see if he/she tries it again. If so, snatch the leash and give a quick tug while saying, "Leave it". Soon enough the dog will figure it out. You may have to do this for several days until the message is understood not to go near the poop. Don't forget to praise the dog when he does as you ask in a happy voice say, "Good girl/boy".

My wife trains dogs and this is what she does. She is a fan of Cesar Milan.

WOW.....Now I have to go look up a Chinese Crested Powder Puff. I am not sure what one is.

I have raised Beagles for years. Although they are outside and in kennels, I am still aware of what the puppies are doing. They are eating thier waste because the puppy food is very rich. It probably tastes just like the puppy food you are feeding. Your puppy will stop doing that once it is weaned off the puppy food. (When the poop actually starts tasting like poop...HAHA)

I know it's disgusting. My 6 mo old did it when we first got him and he might do it again if I let the poop sit in the yard but I don't. I got these pills from the pet store that make his poop taste terrible and it seemed to work but I've also heard ppl say it doesn't work. There's also drops called Forbid that you put on their food but I couldn't find it anywhere.

He will stop when he matures a bit more

if not....Clean it up quickly or teach him not to

Dogs eat there own poop cause they probably didn't digest well and they can still smell some of the food they ate earlier in their own poop.

    whoa! nasty!

next time if you see your puppy doing it again, my advise you to make sure your puppy don't do it again , if it does! then grab that puppy very gentle then keep say " bad dog, bad dog" then put your puppy where the most detest place to stay for awhile. then about 5 mins , let that puppy go, again next time if does it agian then said the same thing then put the same place that your puppy hate that. then stay there for ten minutes, if again then 15 minutes , keep adding ever 5 minutes , then your puppy become intelligent dog.

but be sure don't use newspaper to spank your puppy, just keep saying 'BAD DOG, BAD DOG!" then spank very gentle to that puppy's butt.

it works for me. but not eating the poop.

this could possibly have something to do with where you bought your dog. if you got her from a store or a mall, this is not surprising. Puppy mills supply these pllaces.

if this is the case, puppy mills give them minimal food, the name of the game is $$$$$!

if you got him from a reputable breeder, then your little guy may be lacking something in his diet. if this persists, drs smith & foster sell something in their catalog for dogs who do this. you are really smart to get right on this problem, because it is sometimes can be a toughie! good luck!!

Change the food he's eating. It might be an issue of not enough of the right vitamins and minerals. You might want to check with your Vet.

Lady C, I don't know how..but of all the dogs I've had, one them would do the same...up until I gave him to a friend that needed a guard dog,this...after he messed up my friends face needing a lot of face surgery.Check your YM to see directions...lol

Pouring a bucket of water on him, while he is in the process, may work.

I've heard of the pups mother doing this because she lacked something in her diet after giving birth that the feces provided it's instinctual your pup could be doing it for the same reason, call your vet to find out for sure
