The correct term is digress. The reason for this is because to digress means to deviate or wander away from the main topic or purpose.

Now, to egress means to exit as you said, but you have to consider carefully. If I stray right now and begin talking about dogs, am I really exiting or going out? If a definition seems sketchy like that, it is very possible to find a word that more perfectly matches what you are trying to say. A thesaurus may help you as well!
