the cold war i believe and in response to world war II.

This was a response to communism becase communists were called the "red party"

so better dead than red means it is better be dead than be a communist and the other one means the opposite

    The Cold War

Notably, Communists actually defeated the US when they shut down Joe McCarthy who was tracking down their agents working within our own government. The Democrat party, closely allied with the Soviet Communists, worked hard to stop McCarthy. We now know, from the translated Venona files, that McCarthy had seriously under-estimated the extent of Soviet penetration into our highest government offices and secret operations.

Definitely the cold war, and the political hysteria that came out of it. We had a number of military and political conflicts that ensued based on our opposition to the spread of communism, each of which I'm sure added to the sentiment.
