  • What law made a driver's license in one state valid in all others?

    A driver's license issued in California is automatically respected in all other States. Has it always been this way or was there some legal agreement or decision that made it happen?

  • Is there a master list of materials for each profession for World of Warcraft?

    I would like to know what materials I find in the field will be useful and what materials I should simply discard at the nearest merchant. It would be great to have an alphabetical list of all materials and what profession uses them. Do you know of any out there?

  • Boiling bones for marrow and calcium - skim oil or eat it?

    I'm boiling large "knuckle" bones to extract calcium, marrow and other goodies. Planning on making a soup stock. There is a thick layer of yellow oil on top, do I skim and discard it or keep it? Is this bad fat or is it good stuff? I notice that this oil hardens at room temperature.

  • Recording Employee / Customer Phone Calls - Legal Issues?

    A storage company has contracted an outside company to intercept incoming phone calls and record them for "management review" purposes. The recording captures the customer and employee voices. There is no message for the customer notifying them that the call is being recorded. The external company obviously has access to listen to these conversations as well as the management and owners of the storage company. The employees are also unaware that these conversations are recorded and are listened to.

    This is in California.

    Are there potential legal problems for the owners/management related to recording these employee/customer calls without notification?

  • Is it legal to copy a User Agreement from another site?

    When building a website that will include user forums and media content, it may be difficult to come up with an original User Agreement. If there is an existing User Agreement on another site that can be slightly adjusted, what are the restrictions or considerations involved in copying and using it? How does one go about creating an original User Agreement when so many others are perfectly worded for the intended application?

  • Where can I get a map of the Ice Age ice cap compared to today's?

    I would like a visual comparison of how far the glaciers extended (New York, London, etc) during the last Ice Age compared to where the permanent ice cap is situated today. High-res pictures preferred, as I may seek permission to use them in a short video.

  • I need a Linux-based script to replace text in a PDF document on the fly?

    I would like to serve customized PDF documents from templates. The templates contain tokens like {firstname} that would be replaced with actual data.

    Unfortunately, internal compression in the PDF makes it impossible to write a simple search/replace Perl script. What toolkit or existing script would allow me to do this on a Linux web server?

  • Why won't Apache website subdirectories load index.php unless explicitly requested?

    I am setting up an Apache server. There is a main site and if I use the URL http://www.mainsite.com/ (with mainsite subbing for real name) it loads the index.php page just fine.

    The site has a subdirectory that also contains an index.html and index.php page. In Firefox, if I specify the URL http://www.mainsite.com/subdir then I get redirected to http://www.com/

    In IE, an error says The Page Cannot be Displayed

    Yet, if I specify http://www.mainsite.com/subdir/index.php then the index page loads fine.

    httpd.conf specifies the directory index directive as:

    DirectoryIndex index.html index.php index.htm

    I even tried putting in a .htaccess file with a "DirectoryIndex index.php" directive, no luck.

  • ActionScript 2 - create and delete a TextArea?

    I'm trying to write a simple error display object that has a method to clear the error message by deleting the textarea in which it is displayed. This code displays the error but does not remove it. This should be simple, I'm stumped. Ten points to the first one who helps me solve and understand this!

    YA seems to be 'editing' the lines a bit, truncating them. Sorry about that.

    objError.ShowError = function(errmsg:String)

    {

    objError.errordisplay = createTextField("errordisplay",getNextHighestDepth(),leftbanner,topbanner,Stage.width - leftbanner,Stage.height - topbanner);

    objError.errordisplay.htmlText = errmsg;

    objError.errordisplay.setTextFormat(fmtError);

    objError.errordisplay.selectable = false;

    };

    objError.ClearError = function()

    {

    delete(objError.errordisplay);

    };

  • If Obama, an apostate Muslim, is elected, will our relations with Muslim nations be wrecked?

    Barak Hussein Obama was apparently a practicing Muslim in his youth, attending Mosque with father. A common requirement in Islam is that those leaving the faith must be killed. Obama now asserts he is Christian. As our President, would he obligate our currently allied Muslim nations to turn against us?

    Confirmed: Barack Obama Practiced Islam

  • Programming reference for Adobe Acrobat Reader document security?

    I have been asked to develop a slimmed-down substitute for the Adobe Document Server to provide some basic protections for downloaded documents such as expiration date and one-machine useability (so a doc cannot be copied). I see a file named ebx.etd is used to tell Adobe Reader where to get permission settings for a doc but do not know how to handle this on the server side or what information to send to Acrobat.

    Do you know of programming references that will provide information on how Adobe Reader handles this?

    Do you know of existing non-Adobe systems that provide these sorts of protections to Adobe PDF files?

  • Why did Joe Wilson lie about his Niger findings?

    Democrats and the press insist Bush and the British secret service lied about Saddam's attempts to get Yellowcake Uranium from Niger. Yet, Wilson's own report confirmed the attempt. Wilson later lied about the issue in an editorial he wrote.

    Really, what gives Wilson such confidence he can get away with his lie?

  • What is the symbolic meaning of Ellison swearing in on the Koran?

    Recently, a Democratic congressman named Ellison, a Muslim, insisted upon being sworn in on Thomas Jefferson's Koran for symbolic reasons.

    Jefferson initiated a war against the Muslim Barbary Pirates and used the Koran to understand his Muslim opponents.

    So, what is the real symbolic message Ellison just gave Americans?

  • How to handle Adobe PDF Restrictions in-house?

    I would like to set up an in-house system to manage Adobe PDF restrictions. We are currently contracting a company that uses Adobe Content Server but want this to become an in-house system.

    Are there any PHP or Perl libraries/scripts that will allow us to apply unique identifiers to an Adobe PDF document when it is downloaded so we can manage policy settings on our own server? Has anyone developed a non-Adobe solution to policy management who could share the information?

  • Can Apache be configured to force a document 'Open' on browser?

    We are giving users the ability to open protected Adobe Acrobat files. This requires that they OPEN a security stub file. Problem is, the browser (testing with Firefox) gives them the option whether to Open or Save. If they save, it botches things up.

    How can we tell the browser to always Open the file and not give the ability to Save?
